It's a beautiful day here in Tennessee we had some flooding over the weekend bites, nice and damp, but it's all mostly cleared out now and now she sent a nice deceptively springlike day.

You had some tornadoes near you two didn't very near me now everything is okay bites you, no one on our end bites and it doesn't look like this huge amount of damage from them despite still and we didn't know we had a little weather week. Yeah, yeah, we get a little nervous about that stuff around here so I can imagine. So I commend so well listen I got a guess that he's been with this before and I've been begging him to come on numbing. It's been rather embarrassing having Drive.

He's one of the funniest guys you'll ever meet lot of impressions. He's been working on a new children's it's a weekly podcast based on a book series of books called the epic order of the 70 could talk a little bit about that and he's been voicing folks books and commercials and all kinds of stuff but also he's a caregiver, and yet he is he brings his insights to them, but also brings what I love the most is just this wonderful since the comedic viewpoint that helps us navigate these waters little bit easier and little bit better severely welcome to the show wall.

We meet we went out without power for six and half hours last night and driving to church today. I saw golf course were basically a few keys and a few greens were elevated the rest was water hazard yeah is a tough tough course I would let everybody play through on that when I'm not even right now yeah and I went green you now use a nine iron in a snorkel that is tell me a little bit before we get into the all things caregiver related to me a little bit about your latest project that you been messing over and and this is always a bit of very very big project for you. All you going to continue to be a full-time job if I took the time to do so, but it's called the epic order of the seven it's a series of novels written by Jenny L. Cody was a phenomenal writer for kids and talk about middle school age kids not not little tiny ones but kids with the little school under their belt, and a little bit of reading abilities are not easy books either 600 page novel, but there based on fact. They have my fantasy into them, and there's always a good bit of the God underneath it all and and you can just you, you see that coming through very clearly with her writing, but what what I've done it. I do years ago. Three now three years ago I voiced the ark to read and the fire cloud that was her first in the series is all about Noah's Ark from the bounty's point of the animals so I had to do 105 animals in 40 different dialects, male and female. I created them and some of the main character Scotty dog named Max a million, but the Bruce and Lucy. I got no with a female keeping from namely to bring home because she was bringing home so anyway main characters. I now create a podcast weekly where they host the show along with me and I'm usually the butt of their jobs a lot like this show will say is really not the smartest guy in the room and and so Peter on this. I have worked hard to reach the stature, only to be kicked down and got a whole season under our belt were now working on the second book which is called the boys a revolution in the key and it centered on the life of Patrick Henry was the voice of the revolution and just the spoiler alert, I kinda gave him a James T.

I got up doing shout about toning it down just a bit so that he doesn't come across as Captain Cook is highly skilled.

I pull him back just so slightly. That's what that's what I'm doing and getting out how much getting a bigger audience every week and that's really encouraging as well.

You press on your juggling quite a few things and your your caregiver that you you went through a kind of a rough patch with your wife last time you're on. You guys were coming entering into that rough patch and then it got a bit more challenging than you kind of you know, got out at exit ramp of that little bit but then you went into another one with that. We heard it with you mom right at the juggling act. First of all with my like my wife. She had a major back surgery a couple years ago and Chris that you'll incapacitate her for a while and then it made it more of a semi-capacity to think and now where having to look for a newer car that we can afford, but we need to because you got a five speed with standard transmission and she doesn't trust her legs. After that surgery to mess with the clutch okay so we need to find an automatic transmission car that we can afford, so there's no time I'm doing 99 1/2% of the driving right now callous to say 100 and us if you want to go someplace that means we want to go someplace. So were at that stage that I would like to get past that they got different, do that, then you like to mention my mother is. She's 83 with Parkinson's disease and just recently had a mini stroke and had to have surgery on her carotid artery and go through all of that and go. Now she's in rehab and all of that mess and like you say she's 83, and then she's a little bit feeble and the lion share of falls on my sister because she lived by but yeah my my job is to be the family clown and call her in and cheer her up. So I have the why you say that no department that's super important. So is important and I like to like to drill down on that little bit. I am I have a friend of mine exits a mutual friend of ours Denny that is found out that his pancreatic cancer has come back in the spread was long and it looks like it's the end and I held them up and we talked for the since to get the diagnosis.

Just the other day and we started to just reminisce over some things and in these is voice is very weak, but then we we delved into comedy and humor and and and it was it was you don't even if, as my eyes were kind of tearing up a little bit of fun is both laughing and I thought you know again how important is this to be able to have that sense of of of mirth of humor and and not inappropriate not being weird about it but just letting it flow naturally just as easy as the tears flow and what does it mean to you how important is that been to you through this process will obviously very important but I think the thing here is what you're getting at is not shying away from it or feeling bad that you feel good about something, but I feel good. I mean if you're willing to laugh at something did not shy away from that intent take those moments in and let the laughter for fly yellow in spite of what's going on here. You gotta take your eyes off that once in a while and say okay what's fun about this right now. Yeah, and I found that with my mom.

I'll get on the phone with her. The first thing I saw how you doing as you say all not good and that's the last time I hear that little by little I get on a different topic, I start talking about things that are going better and by the end of the conversation were saying I love you and she was happy I called and wish I didn't have to hang up so you great value and in and turning that around to the positive and even funny side does your mom have a pretty good sense of humor she has to. She was married to my dad and I that matter is that you might my dad has Parkinson's and in that's minister also kept Navy and he loves to laugh and he's gotta good sense of humor. As far as appreciating other people's humor, but is not known for being comedic, but my mother is she's Irish stock and he's got a wicked sense of humor enemy not we were going to go down and see her couple months ago and and Gracie was feeling sick and we in the postponing go next week and in us and what we don't want to get you sick and she's like that that a good life. You know that a good life. You know it wickedly funny and and I think that's been a huge part. She's going through some stuff herself and she's got she's almost blind and she's got an article about my feeling that I don't see too good. I don't hear too good. Know what to good but I do a pretty good while and I love you I love that you know in any but your sister she every good sincere YUMMY again.

She grew up in the same house I did and we all we all have a work that the humor and always thought it around and try to make each other laugh. Our goal every night table when we had buddies over to see if we get my brother to know got his nose that was the John that he's lactose intolerant. You know you you the messages don't really change all that much, even though the formats in the media does at the end of the day were trying to encourage each other and knew the fact that you have the name hope in your name is a testimony to that regardless of what medium is being transferred on if the hope is what matters now. Will said and I do I will tell you this is not an author. Monday I got a call one time to my show and I think I may have told you this, but this guy, the brunt to show it's really caller driven and you never know what you can get just to let you know I did this John the gather was call screening was evidently something was wacky with it and I was answering them laugh on the air now that you know that's dangerous both the all know that that's dangerous and when you say you don't, your level there don't swear that kind of thing and up with this you haven't, let me know so I can. I know I will not let you do as a matter fact but this one guy called it an approach you. This, of sitting there you don't try to do my show discusses.

It always asked McCullers how are you feeling's first question that everything is I want to know how they're feeling from a caregiver standpoint that's important to them. Learn to speak in the voice. So that's what I do it. Ice is good and things come from North to go to the gym and north to go to the gym.

Are you feeling and this is what I hear. I feel nauseous. I hope you show I have so first thing I will do not get.

You may not feel that way every time I listen back to my ship. It's like what he had even respond to calls a talk radio show with you about ready to hurl the medical advisor.

I don't know when you wish you sense on the last segment Denny that I really responded that you don't shy away from the difficult things and I think this is something that John and I when we started doing the show low these years.

Many years ago that back in 2013 together. We used to meet after the show out on the deck there at WAC in Nashville, even over there with us on music Row and at the heart building and we would be back there.

We talk about the concept.

What were trying to do and you know we want to never shy away from the painful things and and never just try to skirt it, but not necessarily get to the point where were just all just thinking and it's not, it's easy to do as one would think but it's really important to do it.

I love what you said but that you don't shy away from that. So I know that through this journey with you and Cindy and insert with your mom there been moments where you know you don't feel like it's not really the right time to be silly.

You don't want to be silly, but same time there is such a release that goes on when you cut up and you laugh and you like. It's like percent is going to be okay okay's dissent is that resonating with you to literally thinking through my mom said one of the things because she did rehab and embed here for several weeks now is on for so she got one of those nasty bedsores, and it didn't scare the daylights out of because that's what my dad passed away from sepsis to the bedsores.

That's at the forefront of my forget the forget the surgery. Forget the rehab forget that all the forget the Parkinson's. That's what's scaring her the most. And I don't remember what I said to her last week, but I actually got her laughing about a bedsore that scaring her that just looked at it from a different angle, so to speak and better them having to mess with it than me and I want that kind of stuff and got her laughing about it and I had some unique experiences with mom lately. Even when we went over to see her and I was there the day of her surgery and part of the problem with Parkinson's is if the men get a little bit off.

Sometimes they have hallucinations grandmom mom had a major hallucination with me thinking I was dad and there's a lot of baggage that she had with dad that never got all mine and and I'm there I'm going. Lord I don't want to deceive my mom but you want me to play this out and as Peter mentioned, I been around a while and I've got a lot of acting experience I and I can do my dad's voice pretty easily without quite a bit like and so I played dad and she thought I was him and she asked me every question she ever wanted an answer for, and I gave her the answer she wanted to hear for an hour for an entire hour he was in this hallucination is one of the most special conversations I've ever had in my life and I pray that she's got things resolved and that can't come back and fix it now, so I thought well I got a chance to do that through me and money taking taking the lemons of this, you know, entering into something that was beneficial for her and she's been on cloud nine.

About this really quite amazing. Denny had never that's the first I've heard of anything like that.

I think that is bleak and thoughtful.

I don't know what happened but he'll still be here with us lately, but my pet peeves and I don't know if you guys have one that you learned along the caregiver during this pit peeves with the person per se. It's a pit peep with the system that you find yourself in as a caregiver and see if this resonates with you Denny and John, are you familiar with Stanford health insurance portability and accountability act of 1996. I remember when this thing was enacted was heavily in the throes of the medical world at that time Gracie had about she was close to her 50th surgery. About that time and so it was, I was very familiar with all the journey but when you go through the hip of process and date they make you jump through all kinds of hoops they won't let you talk to, you have to get them on the phone and give permission if you're calling on the behalf.

You know there's all kinds of forms you have to sign yeah yeah yeah yeah yell for me with this process. We now why is it though, that when you go to the doctor's office and you go through all these hoops with HIPAA and then they yell out your name from the nurse and you know Mr. your hemorrhoid wreck to be is if you know you know where the document. Thank you for that boil and you give them your real name. When you have boiled to be lanced a meeting will I Butler your boil needs to be last man that's not but that is what is the biggest annoyances that I've seen in this process and and and I do that with great Gracie looks at me and she's like why are they calling out my name in front of all these people when they haven't made me jump through all these hoops with the hippo stuff with you with everything else and it's very annoying and I didn't know if I was alone and that pet peeve or not but that's one of mine, John, do you have one.

Let's see what you just want to comment back on the boiler she was here, but John was going. I could see it, to smell like with that stuff though. That's that's like yeah there I mean your you're in a public place. You really have an expectation of privacy, but for doing all this work and all this effort into it.

Now that's that's just you all pile from it from your perspective. I don't like it when people leave shopping carts in the handicap laneway this you need yeah that's my thing. I me I already have like a really neurotic relationship with with shopping carts, but this is this is the worst thing is like I'm clearly for something else. So I mean I might be there might be something that tickles your fancy. That's that's that's a little bit of a peppy of mind that might have that's it's caregiver adjacent certainly will it it it is adjacent to the van of the car yes it yeah yeah yeah what about you Denny what something that is is kind of irritated you to this process. Well the whole I really stink it technology. I know I use a lot of it but only I only know enough to get by. I we have a love-hate relationship. Mostly I hate it and I'm a new doctor or facility or whatever course you gotta fill out a million things, and of course the best thing to do is to go online and fill it out ahead of time so you can get there to your appointment on time instead of having to get there half an hour later fill out the page of the junk. Oh yeah I did I get that recently I did everything according to what the thing said when I got there. These forms I'm going I did that online and well it's blanks are if you think this is so is my face. Yeah, no, I yeah the words that came out were mostly blankety-blank blank, not really. I just I just had to do that with my time taken to the dentist and filled out all the forms ahead of time and then I get there and there still four more forms. They couldn't think they were. They could've sent to me. They were therefore very good confidential is that with the deal know I think it was.

I want to say it was like covert related so that might not necessarily has to know well the new wrinkle and NIII just feel like we have lost the whole purpose of hippo was to provide patient privacy, but somehow that just goes out the window to courseware when you're in the doctor's office in the so for the emergency room and everything else like we are as much yeah I get that and everybody knows you, but after a while it becomes a little annoying that why we had to jump to these hoops but back to that another pet peeve of mine John back to your handicap thing is when people park over the lines next to a handicap vehicle so that you can't get a wheelchair up to the car down you know.

Either way, and I've had that were we could get Gracie into the vehicle because the somebody part over those those/gotta move the whole car to and in so that an important and she used to be by herself. She would drive a lot. She still sometimes that does draft but it would be very difficult for to get into the vehicle when somebody's brought up on encroaching on her like that and and so that that is an my brother has a daughter who is wheelchair-bound and they have a ramp for their vehicle and so forth and they can't lower the rent to get her in and to the right move or they have to move at the van, or whatever. It's in your nephew doing this in the rain and things like that. It is incredibly frustrating and so this is something that you does it for me. They just it just it just it really grinds my gears ready yeah because shopping carts like when somebody you like.

I have my daughter Chris Sharma Carlotta the quickest way to get instant rage enemy is to run over back my foot while walking from the cart you off like that is a lot. John yeah it's payback for what I did to my mom yet I wear a size 11 triple P there really widely doubted it used to be so bad but you will enough.now I had to be on site.

I spend most my life wishing use would painful. I heard a quote about shopping carts and businessman once said, I've never seen anyone who was successful in business who did not return their own court. I read the whole thing about that like that is the shopping cart is the that is that is that the indicator of your ethics like a shopping cart back out. There's no reason to do so by its that's that's that. That is the your you're invested in a more perfect union for us all. Our people are basically good or basically bad and I told him go to a parking lot and you will see that people find the best spot they can get up there to jockey for yell each other was only cut in front of them or get a yell about the cart to leave the cart there. We do a lot of bad things in parking lots are just kinda show off human nature.

In a very negative light is on enforcement do you have an you have another one. Denny yes well that's something you didn't expect until you became got into the caregiving world. Well, not that I can share without getting political and thank you.

Change healthcare systems. A couple years ago and can't wait for the next one yelled yeah I better not say you get letters but but I'm glad to have the IRS behind me with the subissues on affordable healthcare and just what that word really means and leave I'm tracking with you on that one will last one for me.

I guess were going to be going to break your present but one lesson for me as I hate it when I'm what I help out at the grocery store and I'm bagging groceries and then somebody you know like little lady looked the other day and she said I am so glad they're hiring people like you and I make is wrong with this rate of $0.50 out of the stairwell may come. Let me hear you're welcome to Walmart lead to serious is this radio thing doesn't work out. There's always a home park in the front mind ironed interest. We have a these are things that I've open along the way as a caregiver. I have yet encountered things like this in the medical world and you and you see this department's Department of redundancy department. You know you get that a lot. There's just so much overkill and and and like I we gotta go. For example, I share this with Aetna don't chill till this anybody.

Okay, let's just keep that word and we gotta go back over to to Billings this week for an orthopedic surgeon to look at. Gracie was associate MRIs in support of their last week, there's very big specials other than working on her, but we got all the stuff and they just need to just meet with the search. Okay I get it. They took all of them she's ever met with the surgeon, but I was working just not do this in Nvidia, you know, because it means that would do anything just to look at her. You look at the films in the charts and everything else you know we can't. Okay, so what date. Well, he's the surgeons only in the office on Thursdays and I'm thinking really thirsty is that. And that's the only day here in the office kiddo and I know they're doing surgery all the time but they gotta have some level of follow-up with all these patients are doing operations on you can fit in more and thirsty and I was like, come on, you know, I mean I have been to Gracie's been treated now by more than 100 physicians while in her journey will and believe the novelty has worn off and do you feel when you when you're around surgeons and doctors. Denny, do you feel intimidated you feel how you feel about to slap him go there half my age, but yet they call big. That's what we call a play call of duty but I've had some you can tell they can have the God complex words like it. I have your personal life and my have no and in one sense I wanted to feel that way because like okay then Binder can affect the market here, I gotta give up halfway through the you know I'm not.

I'm not really qualified for the yeah yeah but now we had had some people just walked out or gone never again let this man near you with a butter knife and other people that I get a butter knife like the skin with bad like that other guy 35 years old.

Explain thing I'm going wow I'd let you cut on anything you want. How well that and I've been on the same laminae now with Leslie Mike Rosenberger when I wear objecting time, then called Dr. many times not to limit cranial proctologist and I let them figure it out from there. This is something I can't hear this Rosenberger will be right back. You just met with somebody browning.
