Live from Nashville to see this is hope for the caregiver, the nation's number one show for the family caregiver. I am Peter Rosenberg bringing you three decades of experience to help you stay strong and healthy take care of someone who was not 65 million Americans were on this journey right now taking care of love one some kind of impairment. And they're putting themselves between that loved one.

And even worse disaster. How do you help the caregiver. What does it look like you know the vocabulary you know what's going on with you not to speak to that if you are caregiver know what's going on with your own hard enough to ask for help. Do you do you feel confident number one asking for help and understood what that help looks like a did receiving that help.

That's what were going to deal with on this show and every show that we do with it is hope for the caregiver is not a show to teach you how to care, give, I can't help you take care of your lovely morning.

Help me take care of my 80 surgeries, multiple amputations well over 80 9000 doctors, $10 million. This is the journey I've been on and I've learned a few things through this journey and I've learned that the real battle for the family caregiver is not in healthcare, that's important. You gotta get it and you gotta have to have it.

It's a self-correcting problem if you don't have it. Well it's going to identify itself or you that you could have to fix this issue once you got you got it and what you know how to deal with it and work with insurance companies, you got it is a deal with doctors want to know how to do that. You know how to do that, you'll have to it's it's a one and done you want to keep repeating that I've learned over three decades, that the real issue for the family caregivers matter of the heart.

You could throw money at a situation as a caregiver. I was I was talking some folks will go through some brutal times they had all the money more money they could spend in two or three lifetimes and you can just see the stress and the heartache, so wasn't money. It's the matters of the heart. If your heart is squarely and broken to pieces and and and just ripped apart if your head is just like a squirrel cage was six of them in their you not to make good decisions. In that journey, no matter how much money no matter how many resources you have, so we need to back away from those cliffs as caregivers and help each other stay strong and healthy so we can make better choices in it, live a calm or healthier and even more joyful life.

If that's where you are today. You're in the right place.

800-688-9522 800-688-9522 this is 1 December so we like to start off a lot of Christmas things. So we have great music but on the show speaking great music you know and you love him. He's the baron of the board.

The salt of the sale, the Earl of engineering. The man who stockings are hung from the ceiling with care.

He is John Butler. The count of mighty disco. Everyone I got to somehow mother so long that you only 5 foot 17. Man is tall so the geese with a rake, listen, you looking dapper to go.

Those those cutesy because John's. Sometimes he's on video but most time is not because we haven't really got the right angle bill to get you edits, dark where you keep it in the case well you know all all the pictures are taken of me or from caller down with you holding some kind of lacquer you with a reverse Wilson reverse split. Well flip will play very well. I am well how much so I am. I just put a big weekend with a lot of things going on and want to give a little programming note out in air less like there's a re-airing tonight of my appearance on the Huckabee show grievances though. If McGreevey is airing of grievances that I've been using the bowl. It's another festive Miss America what we I was on Mike Huckabee show this week is on TV and it is night and just had a marvelous time. I give you little preview of this bus to the book was good and it made them laugh and made them laugh hard and so take a look at it and see to be on tonight seven central eight Eastern on Trinity broadcasting network, and I think you'll find it quite I think you like I I'm a little scared which kind you don't know pottage but it it was a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun.

We had a good time and just wonderful guide Mrs. Huckabee was there. Gracie came out the other thing there. And if you wish.

It was wonderful and Mrs. Hadley and Gracie just really connected very well and he did like my truck impersonation slick. His daughter works for the press itself is like she's doing a great job she's fabulous you so awesome, but it in but just a gringa and enjoyed him. He was your governor. It was my Gov. III met a Mets boy state. Once on that was see you in school when he was governor.

Yes, that's correct. Okay, you were never in school and Bill Clinton was well you were I was. I was in grade school and met him to actually because we know gradeschool kids take tours of the capital and things like that. But yeah, that was I was I was a kid that he will. The guys is a very sharp guy and very very personable and you have a lot of politicians over the years and I'm sorry some of some of them just to have it they just got this magnetism binder just they just love people they love being around people that others not so much that I'm not I can wonder whether got into it because… Of dower, you know you can't point out that the big vocab words tower.

I had no idea just that $76: on the board of work. Always one will end and then there's a there's an interview I did with Sandy Rios in the morning.

She's American family radio throughout the week government policy and little show but on Friday she doesn't extended interview and I did that with her. She was daughter with special needs 20 years. She took care of her and then the daughter and passed away.

But it was pretty tough journey for we had a marvelous conversation and that that's available out on AFR.net on the podcast and I will put it on my website as well and only hope for the caregiver and seven caregiver landmines will do books to others or both of my books, my new book is seven caregiver landmines and how you can avoid them and both of them shot up on the charts in Amazon there are number three and number four for Kindle books for caregivers right on times like what you have enough like I am always glad when you when you say the full title seven caregiver landmines and how and how you can avoid them. That's important that this is such a difficult time for caregivers.

The Thanksgiving cut marks the unofficial season of hey this is gonna be tough.

You know for for us as caregivers, and so friends don't let friends caregiver loan.

Okay, we just don't do it to me you we we got to we got to reach into people's challenges with with a practical lifeline and that's what I wrote seven caregiver landmines and how you can avoid it for because it's just a field manual for caregivers. You can pick it up and it is less than seven bucks. I mean I aggregated a lifetime of experience into a little seven well it it's it's just little tiny things that will work today. That will help you as a failed family caregiver right now. Not six months from now.

Today. Right now that you talk about this being not a book that you read front to back. Now this is now you can you can start at the end of it and read it.

You don't Hebrew style back pedal there you go right to left to unroll the entire thing, parchment scrolls, but it's of no it's it's a very easy book to read.

You can pick up and look at any spot, but I would highly recommend it and I'm going to do the audiobook starting next week. John will work on that enabled the hope for the character is audiobook, but I wanted to split this out there because were going into a very difficult time as family caregivers were busy trying to make it special for someone else. We got a lot of pressure on us already and then we tried to take on more than we can and we tend to we tend to put on so much, as we just cut it's it's gonna pop out somewhere you know.

And that brings us to our caregiver tip of the day. Our caregiver tip of the day. Brought to you by stating without standing with hope.com and that is the presenting sponsor of the show that is the organization the Gracie that started many years ago. We have two programs. It's for the wounded and those who care for the way of a prosthetic limb. Outreach supplies are going up this weekend to delay a couple days because I had to order some some other items in and we got it. Everything is ready to go should go out this week over to West Africa so we can continue putting legs on folks to get some little feet in this week little feet.

Because there's there's a couple kids are coming and we need pediatric feet and we just couldn't we. We recycle prosthetic limbs yes and so we collect limbs from come all over the country but but most of the good be adults and we don't get enough pediatric limb to come in even though kids are out drawing them all the time. For whatever reason are not making their way to a so if you know somebody whose child has a prussic limiter outgrowing it and getting a new one. Please don't let anybody throw that away will take it and but but there's a great company up in Ohio. How will they send us some feet, a box of feet of little feet theater standard length right here. Nothing's little feet in that abandoned little. I think little foot well is maybe more than 1 million, but if what he wanted that what is this nightmare little but I am but we got a we had to get some pediatric use. We got me about that but stating without.com you can be part of that. It's the end of the year. Right now your tax-deductible gift will help continue this work of putting legs on Gracie's fellow amputees helping us do the show stating without.com go out there today. Please take a look at how you can get involved.

Here's our caregiver tip of the days we go into the holiday season. Pause pause PA USD pause.

Please avoid using sarcastic energy pause. Please look I would appreciate if you just tagged me in the process. I look until you know this but this is something I do because I think sometimes as caregivers. It's too easy for us to be sarcastic and it's okay to have fun being sarcastic and we do that all the time here. There's a point when you're under a lot of pain and stress that sarcastic energy comes out is biting you not read with some vitriol yeah and so pause PA you this E pause. Please avoid using sarcastic energy. Sometimes, sometimes as caregivers we have to bite our tongues and learn to like the taste of blood. You know sometimes you have to do that. That's okay I really have to make amends for something I didn't say is why you have a radio rarely have to make a business of that I didn't say hey listen, this is hope for the caregiver. You can follow along on Facebook laugh and it hopefully caregiver. You can also call it 800-688-9522 we always look to hear from you and we got more to go. Don't go away. So glad you and some Peter Rosenberg will be right back. You missed the deadline to sign up, sign up for a plan you're not happy with you still have a choice. Medicare is a healthcare sharing program hundreds of thousands of Christians are part of this can save you a lots typical savings for families about 500 bucks a month you can join Medicare anytime it's easy to call and look into it.

There's no pressure at all man what a difference it can make 855 25 share. That's 855 25 share. Have you ever struggled to trust God when lousy things happen to you.

I'm Gracie Rosenberger, 1983 I experienced a horrific car accident, leading to 80 surgeries in both legs and became I questioned why God allowed something so brutal to happen to me. But over time, my questions changed and I discovered courage to trust God that understanding along with an appreciation for quality prosthetic limbs led me to establish standing with help more than a dozen years we been working with the government of Ghana and West Africa, equipping and training local workers to build and maintain quality prosthetic limbs for their own people on a regular basis. We purchased ship equipment and supplies and with the help of inmates in a Tennessee prison. We also recycle parts from donated lambs. All of this is to point others to Christ. The source of my help and strength, please visit standing without.com to learn more and participate in lifting others that stating without.com. I'm Gracie. I am stating without this June. This is in the glory of the Lord from the Messiah. This is the Atlanta Symphony years ago under the direction of Robert Shaw, the fabulous Robert show a stationary and this is one of my favorite pieces from Handel's Messiah and rear in the Advent season here and I just I just love this that are required in order to sing this morning at church. And they just looked and it was just just beautiful. So that's a good way to start off the Advent season and want to give a big shout out to all the folks in Stevensville church that was there was just wonderful this morning. Of course, thank you for that. Hey, I will back in the show for caregivers about caregivers hosted by caregiver. This is Peter Rosenberg.

I am so glad you were with us. We are on a mission to help strengthen the family caregiver will equip them to navigate through the challenges of caring for someone with an impairment and that impairment may be the disease trauma.

It could be all kinds of things you know it, and we've also extended this to mental illness and to addiction issues and so forth any type of impairment there. Somebody stand between that person even worst disaster that you were on a mission to help you could be a part of that if you will call the show today 800-688-9522 800-688-9522 and will glad you with this due to getting what I'm just reiterate this letter to begin tonight at 7 o'clock on TBN. 7 o'clock Central TV and you can see my appearance on the Mike Huckabee show and talk a little bit about the subject. It was just a great time and I hope you enjoy it also will have several opposites in the paper this week and try to put that out on our website and our Facebook page.

Hope for the caregiver. The website is hopefully caregiver.com and Facebook pages Facebook.com hope the caregiver would try to keep everything simple right here in the podcast is free to buy the way to get all of that and hope for the caregiver.com and would you take a look at it see all the resources were putting out there for you to take advantage of it. You go to this time. This is a difficult time for the family caregiver. The holidays are just difficult. There's just no way around it is just hard okay don't do this alone. Friends don't let friends caregiver loan.

Okay so and that brings us to today's senior moment. I don't care. Today's senior moment brought to you by our friends at morning point senior living and memory care center, morning point.com you will DOI NTE there's that point morning point.com today senior moment, and when I say friends don't let friends caregiver loan here something I just ask you to consider for your time. A lot of seniors right now for the holidays it it did to try to do a lot of things for others, for themselves to get seniors taking care of seniors just be cognizant.

I'm just asking for you to be cognizant flushed every member of raising Arizona. We said we released ourselves on her own recognizance is I can get that out of about. So what I think we aware where of the 27 thing glosses with the circles and arrows in the paragraph on the back. Be aware of seniors taking care of seniors and offered to help with some stuff some extra groceries that you can just bring by the weather's is the weather outside is finishing from John now okay Weathers is is is at times rather challenging the traffic is often always, funky at this time year. It's darker earlier and it's hard for seniors to try to do a lot of the things you do so just be aware.

Maybe you can pick out a couple of things at the grocery store. Maybe you could say hey look to it. Can I help you get some of your Christmas cards. Think such as that. Can I bring something to you instead of making them get out and have to feel like they've got a get out and do things like that that is just a simple way. Seniors are not known for wanting to drive at night depending on who they are, what's going on with it like a particular drive at night, you know. And night is early this time a year and people try to hustle and bustle you don't. We never know the pain were saved from, but we can be proactive and try to offer some help to this and speak in a way that makes sense to folks saying look I can, we can help with this that you don't have to do something exotic you don't have to go all crazy about it. Maybe it's just that somebody should just blow off the leaves from the walkway so that they don't trip on wet leaves, you know simple things like that are just just look at the gutters, make sure the gutters are okay if you if you get a chance just just look after each other you know we got enough vitriol of this world and I think if we just kind of look after one another. That would be a great Christmas gift to ourselves and you know what to do it anonymously if you can. Thank you not there is there are times I have done things for someone else and I would tell them who I was added to look anything about I just did it. There is there that is a wonderful thing to do. So look for ways to kinda do these things but don't make a production by just just do it.

I think that that I think that honors the that this time a year better. I think it honors God better. If not, try to just make ourselves the center of all the just just do it and and looked for ways to be kind to each other in the process. Also, be kind to yourself as well.

Sets are today senior moment and we got more to go ahead and do you know how to pick out a social worker do not do that. You know what to look for what not to look for what what kind of void, but we'll talk about that in a minute because we talked about use utilizing social workers a lot. Let's make sure we get the right one for you. 800-688-9522 800-688-9522 dispute Rosenberger hopefully caregiver will be right back. Great news. If you miss the deadline to sign up for health insurance or if you sign up for a plan you're not happy with you still have a choice.

I'm gracing Rosenberger in 1983 I experienced a horrific car accident, leading to 80 surgeries in both legs and became I questioned why God allowed something so brittle to happen to me.

But over time the questions changed and I discovered courage to trust God that understanding along with an appreciation for quality prosthetic limbs led me to establish standing with help more than a dozen years we been working with the government of Ghana and West Africa, equipping and training local workers to build and maintain quality prosthetic limbs for their own people on a regular basis.

The source of my help and strength, please visit standing with help.com to learn more and participate in lifting others that standing without.com. I'm Gracie. I am staining without back to the show for caregivers about caregivers. My caregiver, I am Peter Rosenberger bringing three decades of experience is not one that's not to the decades of experience to help you stay strong and healthy as you take care of someone who is not one to be part of the show. 800-688-9522 800-688-9522 and I will I love the music of the season.

I just do Johnson thank you for this good for your soul yeah and and and and Sandy Williams to all yeah you just can't you I got a buddy but has is his ring tone, but he never changed it so all your love is just the recall of you get that and out folly, scope, well that's like not changing your clocks for that will surely certainly explained a lot. One of things we talked about on the show often is the need for us is caregivers to have some professional help involved with us to navigate through the system and the system could be the healthcare system.

It could be the hospice system. It could be the hospital system itself.

It could be Medicare. There's so many different components of this and he can overwhelm you really can't and I refer a lot of folks out to social workers because I think they are the workhorses of this whole industry and they they bring a wealth of information and I've got a friend of mine who's been doing this for some time and she's on the phone with me. Her name is Trinity and Trinity is a social worker and I wanted to get her thoughts on what we can do to look for good ones bad ones that you know that, thing only what what or something. What are some critiques if you're interviewing a social worker don't just take the first person comes a door listless asked some qualifying questions or let's do some background work. Let's make sure we got the right match for us and so Trinity women.

God love you for it and thank you for doing the your I go to counselor for this and do you feel like a consultant yet you just 20 minutes preplanning from the apartment, but don't try to play with John and I avoid planning if at all possible I've been told to avoid by my doctor on a medical device of out of it when I started with the show and the stations said a lot. We don't want you scripting the show and I said hello text to be a prophet, so social workers can be in a tremendous resource.

You are a tremendous resource to many people you have been there for a lot of families, love individuals, but people don't know about this a lot. They don't know deciding what to do and I just thought we thought a couple things of what we need to do if if we need a social worker life. What are some scenarios that would say we need to social work. About that was how would we know okay do I need to make this decision to get a social worker involved in your family part responsible for or you're going to be available for a while. Let's say your distant caregiver but then you're having surgery or treatment and you're not can be available for a while so you have someone who has eyes on your person if their family glass or strife to social workers tend to be pretty skilled in juggling family dynamic will and said I'm getting that a lot.

I get that a lot from so many different folks that the family is just kind of coming unraveled and that's one of the first go to. I have a social worker so that that's good to hear, use, reaffirm that because you don't families really are just and and and pastors, God love them. They really do try to help with that but social workers bring a different set of skills to that that conflict. That's the first thing I would when you think and every caregiver might not be doing a good job like I was involved in that situation, but also everyone who not caregiver know how to caregiver should do it better.

That's the truth. You should never happen. You know I like it with people so that the standards did yell out what I should be calling for the letter scrimmage. Fantastic heckler. You know there's there's always people that will come along and parachuted in so you should be doing this you should be doing this and and so yeah that happens worker party and weight caregiver respite.

Our or maybe social worker needs to help family members calm down. The fight, so that is one situation or something along caregivers feel like they need respite, but they don't think it's available and you not talk about this on their a lot of different things that could be available may not be ideal, but it's better it's better than the caregiver working themselves into a grave absolutely and that's and that's happening and sometimes it available some nursing homes provide rapid so if you're family members at home and you have a family wedding to go to single and available for a while but then data nursing homes are not inexpensive but you know your person say they're getting good medical care they're getting your medications and all that it is available but social work will know what's available in your area so you got family dynamics that are going on.

You got distant and that by the way, the family is spread out. We've had the family dashboard and so John did you get that word just one child.

I did pull it from the 12 hour, so families are spread all over the country and so this that's a real deal that that's happening because you got somebody checking on somebody that are three states away. So that's a scenario that got family spread out if you get family conflict of dynamics are what is that there each other's throats.

Social workers can bring some of those dynamics, and then I got one thing talk about when you have a like a special needs child and you want to get them into some type of path is that an area where caregivers can help map that path out a little bit whether smoke rehab, special schools all the stuff is that is that in the in the.

The bailiwick of a caregiver of a social worker will know what's available in your area like this week. I did some research and I got discouraged because I different that certification for social worker might have be so different, so I dare not throw around fancy letter on what they need to have after their name, but I did come up with a list of places where you might be able to find that private practice social worker who specializes in either vulnerable patients and that can be the special needs child all the way. The geriatric patient know what's in your specific day. An area like this, you got just because her social worker nestling in the silly trained or equipped to deal with special needs children or geriatric parents. Are you going to have to find the subspecialties that that that it didn't used to be the case. I guess it is now is will find out when I walked to my mom, print, nursing home, had a nurse on staff and they had several social workers, so the nurse on staff would go to the doctors appointment with the person or geriatric individual, but they also work with special needs children. So when you're interviewing that social worker find out what their area of specialty. Don't let not everybody does good work and I know their families I work with that did not like my approach is fine auto mechanic to work on our car so that he would like to approach. I say that's a woman is Satan directs uterine some people like cancel handholding which I can do that when I'm prompted with violence in the hall know that goes right out the door and you have been and there's there's there's all all of that and then some. I was talking to somebody the other day. By the way, and I want to throw this at the lightning that you I know you like this sort of thing. So some of the other day and a friend of mine and his father started striking in his elderly father now this buddy of mine is a is a former football player and in the martial arts expert and so's father is hurting the funds over man but he was he was becoming very, very aggressive, and it surprised my friend and he was able to basically calm diffuse the situation down and so forth. But there's there's all this kind of stuff that is starting to happen. People are overwhelmed but now a lot if it it because he's a big guy and he could handle himself, and he could deal with his father in Carbondale and dementia will do that to you know that we we did a whole bout of junk that we did the show about dementia when they have a like basically scuba vision yeah yeah you and I gave him some tips that from that show what you're having violence and if that guy been dealing with this smaller wife that was taking care of. For example really hurt and is that a situation where you would step in as a social worker in your field were social workers committed that's okay, here's here's how we can back away from this and start developing a better plan is that the set social workers job at that point to come is that is that in your scope of the light that you are no Alex back around like I did not there in the home at the time and had manager mortgage stress latent day and it might be something where the caregiver needs to have an additional person in the home during that period of time when the sundowner causes violent will and that's something to caregivers aren't thinking clearly.

Sometimes because were so distraught and so this is why we are. This might push them to your field right now we want to qualify whether.what what area of expertise. They have and then what are some what are some other just a tip or two when you're interviewing a social worker. Well, what services they provide.

You know up front what to expect from them, then you're not disappointed in and call you up and say that woman you had on said date cover everything Welton every social worker doesn't cover everything. You also need to ask them how long they've been in private practice hung their shingle out three well I was thinking 21 and raised in a gated community and then sheltered the little black will now that's good to know how long they've been doing this and then and then up now, let's question the food go to break your then we get wrapped up, but less question what about funds what where the charge monthly private pay in my private practice. Now you want me to hang around till after the break. I have some suggestions on where to find them in some of those groups might be paid by other programs like insurance companies or what possibly to Pam Academy average like it long term care coverage, but like some probate courts work with a lot of case managers yes quickly when their family dynamic issues going on okay so they'll have them and I know that a lot of doctors offices are starting to incorporate a social worker into their clinic. I got buddy bonds neurologist that has that on staff know and they're dealing with that because of so many patients with Alzheimer's and so forth. Will a doctor top weight will let me know if you want yellow below to get to the break here and will will will wrap this up here right after the break. Just thanks for the tips on this. This is my friend Trinity talking about talk about social workers and how valuable they can be to the family caregiver. A lot of things we gotta consider no go away.

We got more 800-688-9522 800-688-9522 are some great news. If you miss the deadline to sign up for health insurance or if you sign up for a plan you're not happy with you still have a choice. I am staining with help of John hasting just… Just want to show for caregivers, this is Peter Rosenberger. I am thrilled to hear this is hope for the caregiver of the nation's number one show for the caregiver were so glad that you're part of an 800-688-9522 were to wrap up our conversation with my friend Trinity, who is a social worker and gives me good tips throughout the week.

We run things by her all the time, of what we need to look for his caregivers to help us with her and she gives a couple good tips here on what we need to look for in a caregiver with a scenario living review. If you got family dynamics that are just the fan was just at each other's throat that's the time for social worker. If the family is spread apart and you got a loved one, and in another state that's going through some stuff in your way, way of you will have across the country.

Whenever that's the time for social worker.

These are things you want to look for and a lot of times doctors offices will have on the referred lot of her in private practice. So here are some things that she said to go ahead and interview them with you and find out what their area of expertise is in and how long have they been in private practice that's very important to know because you don't want somebody that just freshly out of school with the ink still drawn the diploma. One of those people that have met him 3×2 times was George Herbert Walker Bush and I had the pleasure of meeting him Gracie are set in the box at the 2004 Republican national convention in Madison Square Garden's after we performed. We opened up the event that night, Gracie's first woman with a disability to sing in any political parties convention. We were sitting there and here comes George and Barbara and they set right in front of us and we got started when I went to introduce him. Gracie former president stood up and and to meet Gracie Sheahan and Bob Dole was with him.

It was just such a she's such a gentleman and Barbara Gracie's prosthetic legs were right kind of catty corner to Barbara's eyes right compass, right between George and Barbara. She just can't reach up and pet Gracie selects what she was when she does get do it and and then later grandma she gets. She was yeah and and so then she then we met George Herbert Walker Bush again when Gracie sang for that that he spoke it here in Nashville and it was a real touching time and she is and she reminded her that I would end up at the picture out there agree to Gracie and and it's out of the two of them and it was just a real sweet pictures of funny to watch him like that.
