And even worse disaster. How do you help the caregiver. What does it look like you know the vocabulary you know what's going on with you not to speak to that if you are caregiver know what's going on with your own hard enough to ask for help. Do you do you feel confident number one asking for help and understood what that help looks like a did receiving that help.

That's what were going to deal with on this show and every show that we do with it is hope for the caregiver is not a show to teach you how to care, give, I can't help you take care of your lovely morning.

Help me take care of my 80 surgeries, multiple amputations well over 80 9000 doctors, $10 million. This is the journey I've been on and I've learned a few things through this journey and I've learned that the real battle for the family caregiver is not in healthcare, that's important. You gotta get it and you gotta have to have it.

It's a self-correcting problem if you don't have it. Well it's going to identify itself or you that you could have to fix this issue once you got you got it and what you know how to deal with it and work with insurance companies, you got it is a deal with doctors want to know how to do that. You know how to do that, you'll have to it's it's a one and done you want to keep repeating that I've learned over three decades, that the real issue for the family caregivers matter of the heart.

You could throw money at a situation as a caregiver. I was I was talking some folks will go through some brutal times they had all the money more money they could spend in two or three lifetimes and you can just see the stress and the heartache, so wasn't money. It's the matters of the heart. If your heart is squarely and broken to pieces and and and just ripped apart if your head is just like a squirrel cage was six of them in their you not to make good decisions. In that journey, no matter how much money no matter how many resources you have, so we need to back away from those cliffs as caregivers and help each other stay strong and healthy so we can make better choices in it, live a calm or healthier and even more joyful life.

Maybe you can pick out a couple of things at the grocery store. Maybe you could say hey look to it. Can I help you get some of your Christmas cards. Think such as that. Can I bring something to you instead of making them get out and have to feel like they've got a get out and do things like that that is just a simple way. Seniors are not known for wanting to drive at night depending on who they are, what's going on with it like a particular drive at night, you know. And night is early this time a year and people try to hustle and bustle you don't. We never know the pain were saved from, but we can be proactive and try to offer some help to this and speak in a way that makes sense to folks saying look I can, we can help with this that you don't have to do something exotic you don't have to go all crazy about it. Maybe it's just that somebody should just blow off the leaves from the walkway so that they don't trip on wet leaves, you know simple things like that are just just look at the gutters, make sure the gutters are okay if you if you get a chance just just look after each other you know we got enough vitriol of this world and I think if we just kind of look after one another. That would be a great Christmas gift to ourselves and you know what to do it anonymously if you can. Thank you not there is there are times I have done things for someone else and I would tell them who I was added to look anything about I just did it. There is there that is a wonderful thing to do. So look for ways to kinda do these things but don't make a production by just just do it.

I think that that I think that honors the that this time a year better. I think it honors God better. If not, try to just make ourselves the center of all the just just do it and and looked for ways to be kind to each other in the process. Also, be kind to yourself as well.

One of things we talked about on the show often is the need for us is caregivers to have some professional help involved with us to navigate through the system and the system could be the healthcare system.

It could be the hospice system. It could be the hospital system itself.

It could be Medicare. There's so many different components of this and he can overwhelm you really can't and I refer a lot of folks out to social workers because I think they are the workhorses of this whole industry and they they bring a wealth of information and I've got a friend of mine who's been doing this for some time and she's on the phone with me. Her name is Trinity and Trinity is a social worker and I wanted to get her thoughts on what we can do to look for good ones bad ones that you know that, thing only what what or something. What are some critiques if you're interviewing a social worker don't just take the first person comes a door listless asked some qualifying questions or let's do some background work. Let's make sure we got the right match for us and so Trinity women.

God love you for it and thank you for doing the your I go to counselor for this and do you feel like a consultant yet you just 20 minutes preplanning from the apartment, but don't try to play with John and I avoid planning if at all possible I've been told to avoid by my doctor on a medical device of out of it when I started with the show and the stations said a lot. We don't want you scripting the show and I said hello text to be a prophet, so social workers can be in a tremendous resource.

You are a tremendous resource to many people you have been there for a lot of families, love individuals, but people don't know about this a lot. They don't know deciding what to do and I just thought we thought a couple things of what we need to do if if we need a social worker life. What are some scenarios that would say we need to social work. About that was how would we know okay do I need to make this decision to get a social worker involved in your family part responsible for or you're going to be available for a while. Let's say your distant caregiver but then you're having surgery or treatment and you're not can be available for a while so you have someone who has eyes on your person if their family glass or strife to social workers tend to be pretty skilled in juggling family dynamic will and said I'm getting that a lot.

I get that a lot from so many different folks that the family is just kind of coming unraveled and that's one of the first go to. I have a social worker so that that's good to hear, use, reaffirm that because you don't families really are just and and and pastors, God love them. They really do try to help with that but social workers bring a different set of skills to that that conflict. That's the first thing I would when you think and every caregiver might not be doing a good job like I was involved in that situation, but also everyone who not caregiver know how to caregiver should do it better.

That's the truth. You should never happen. You know I like it with people so that the standards did yell out what I should be calling for the letter scrimmage. Fantastic heckler. You know there's there's always people that will come along and parachuted in so you should be doing this you should be doing this and and so yeah that happens worker party and weight caregiver respite.

Our or maybe social worker needs to help family members calm down. The fight, so that is one situation or something along caregivers feel like they need respite, but they don't think it's available and you not talk about this on their a lot of different things that could be available may not be ideal, but it's better it's better than the caregiver working themselves into a grave absolutely and that's and that's happening and sometimes it available some nursing homes provide rapid so if you're family members at home and you have a family wedding to go to single and available for a while but then data nursing homes are not inexpensive but you know your person say they're getting good medical care they're getting your medications and all that it is available but social work will know what's available in your area so you got family dynamics that are going on.

You got distant and that by the way, the family is spread out. We've had the family dashboard and so John did you get that word just one child.

I did pull it from the 12 hour, so families are spread all over the country and so this that's a real deal that that's happening because you got somebody checking on somebody that are three states away. So that's a scenario that got family spread out if you get family conflict of dynamics are what is that there each other's throats.

Social workers can bring some of those dynamics, and then I got one thing talk about when you have a like a special needs child and you want to get them into some type of path is that an area where caregivers can help map that path out a little bit whether smoke rehab, special schools all the stuff is that is that in the in the.

The bailiwick of a caregiver of a social worker will know what's available in your area like this week. I did some research and I got discouraged because I different that certification for social worker might have be so different, so I dare not throw around fancy letter on what they need to have after their name, but I did come up with a list of places where you might be able to find that private practice social worker who specializes in either vulnerable patients and that can be the special needs child all the way. The geriatric patient know what's in your specific day. An area like this, you got just because her social worker nestling in the silly trained or equipped to deal with special needs children or geriatric parents. Are you going to have to find the subspecialties that that that it didn't used to be the case. I guess it is now is will find out when I walked to my mom, print, nursing home, had a nurse on staff and they had several social workers, so the nurse on staff would go to the doctors appointment with the person or geriatric individual, but they also work with special needs children. So when you're interviewing that social worker find out what their area of specialty. Don't let not everybody does good work and I know their families I work with that did not like my approach is fine auto mechanic to work on our car so that he would like to approach. I say that's a woman is Satan directs uterine some people like cancel handholding which I can do that when I'm prompted with violence in the hall know that goes right out the door and you have been and there's there's there's all all of that and then some. I was talking to somebody the other day. By the way, and I want to throw this at the lightning that you I know you like this sort of thing. So some of the other day and a friend of mine and his father started striking in his elderly father now this buddy of mine is a is a former football player and in the martial arts expert and so's father is hurting the funds over man but he was he was becoming very, very aggressive, and it surprised my friend and he was able to basically calm diffuse the situation down and so forth. But there's there's all this kind of stuff that is starting to happen. People are overwhelmed but now a lot if it it because he's a big guy and he could handle himself, and he could deal with his father in Carbondale and dementia will do that to you know that we we did a whole bout of junk that we did the show about dementia when they have a like basically scuba vision yeah yeah you and I gave him some tips that from that show what you're having violence and if that guy been dealing with this smaller wife that was taking care of. For example really hurt and is that a situation where you would step in as a social worker in your field were social workers committed that's okay, here's here's how we can back away from this and start developing a better plan is that the set social workers job at that point to come is that is that in your scope of the light that you are no Alex back around like I did not there in the home at the time and had manager mortgage stress latent day and it might be something where the caregiver needs to have an additional person in the home during that period of time when the sundowner causes violent will and that's something to caregivers aren't thinking clearly.

Sometimes because were so distraught and so this is why we are. This might push them to your field right now we want to qualify whether.what what area of expertise. They have and then what are some what are some other just a tip or two when you're interviewing a social worker. Well, what services they provide.

You know up front what to expect from them, then you're not disappointed in and call you up and say that woman you had on said date cover everything Welton every social worker doesn't cover everything. You also need to ask them how long they've been in private practice hung their shingle out three well I was thinking 21 and raised in a gated community and then sheltered the little black will now that's good to know how long they've been doing this and then and then up now, let's question the food go to break your then we get wrapped up, but less question what about funds what where the charge monthly private pay in my private practice. Now you want me to hang around till after the break. I have some suggestions on where to find them in some of those groups might be paid by other programs like insurance companies or what possibly to Pam Academy average like it long term care coverage, but like some probate courts work with a lot of case managers yes quickly when their family dynamic issues going on okay so they'll have them and I know that a lot of doctors offices are starting to incorporate a social worker into their clinic. I got buddy bonds neurologist that has that on staff know and they're dealing with that because of so many patients with Alzheimer's and so forth. We run things by her all the time, of what we need to look for his caregivers to help us with her and she gives a couple good tips here on what we need to look for in a caregiver with a scenario living review. If you got family dynamics that are just the fan was just at each other's throat that's the time for social worker. If the family is spread apart and you got a loved one, and in another state that's going through some stuff in your way, way of you will have across the country.

Whenever that's the time for social worker.

These are things you want to look for and a lot of times doctors offices will have on the referred lot of her in private practice. So here are some things that she said to go ahead and interview them with you and find out what their area of expertise is in and how long have they been in private practice that's very important to know because you don't want somebody that just freshly out of school with the ink still drawn the diploma. Depending on your situation at that that's what you what he wants but little bit of experience to and then you want to ask you much the charges asked how much do you charge that there sometimes you can be paid for through various things that sometimes maybe even insured you may have a policy that will cover something that I don't know but you you want to have that information upfront so that you know what's going on all right last tip Trinity anything you want to add to that reference. You and I didn't get a reference in zone yet, but I know you know John well worker followed this good advice absolute if if it feels funky back away. You know there's nobody pushing you to that would listen Trinity. Thank you. You have to do this again I will will give you much warning them that you had to do this again because this is not to go away. This is an issue that so many people have never really thought about and don't look at him of the first time a social worker help me deal with some hospital stuff with Gracie and it was just it was overwhelmingly and the hospital social worker came. I've had the opportunity to meet some interesting people in my life.

One of those people that have met him 3×2 times was George Herbert Walker Bush and I had the pleasure of meeting him Gracie are set in the box at the 2004 Republican national convention in Madison Square Garden's after we performed. We opened up the event that night, Gracie's first woman with a disability to sing in any political parties convention. We were sitting there and here comes George and Barbara and they set right in front of us and we got started when I went to introduce him. Gracie former president stood up and and to meet Gracie Sheahan and Bob Dole was with him.

It was just such a she's such a gentleman and Barbara Gracie's prosthetic legs were right kind of catty corner to Barbara's eyes right compass, right between George and Barbara. She just can't reach up and pet Gracie selects what she was when she does get do it and and then later grandma she gets. She was yeah and and so then she then we met George Herbert Walker Bush again when Gracie sang for that that he spoke it here in Nashville and it was a real touching time and she is and she reminded her that I would end up at the picture out there agree to Gracie and and it's out of the two of them and it was just a real sweet pictures of funny to watch him like that. So anyway, or our deepest sympathy and gratitude to the Bush family for loaning us this extraordinary man to our country.
