Melissa Strickland (Sr. Director of Communications for Samaritan's Purse) called the show to share the work of Samaritan's Purse in NYC (and other places). Melissa's also a caregiver herself for a husband with high-risk issues ...so going to NY was not easy task.

Listen to: Why she did it, and what she discovered there about:

  • the people they treat
  • the reception from New Yorkers
  • the push back from a small but VERY vocal minority
  • but most of all...what's she learned about faith in Christ.

After listening to this podcast ...PLEASE share it with everyone in your social media world, and commit to praying for Melissa and all the folks at Samaritan's  Purse ...and then consider supporting them financially at www.samaritanspurse.org

This is a fun Howdy do a bit taking care of a woman who has the COBIT like to email her doctor say there's no way that I don't test me on Monday up tested negative. A month ago with her say there's no way you could be in proximity to her like you are as a caregiver and not have an sort of test your money with this new test that tells what about you anybody's then we want your blood. If you do a funeral welcome to hope for the caregiver.

I am so thrilled to have you with us. 888-589-8840 888-589-8840 if you want to be a part of the show and we're glad to have you with us is the nation's largest radio program for family caregivers and for the last little over month I've been cared for my wife through this process she got it.

We think that she got it when she went to see a specialist in the city actually couple hundred miles away from us and it's it's one of things we had to spend the night over there.

This is in March and it was just things that happen, and evidently this thing is so contagious that you know she picked it up over there.

I have not been symptomatic for this except for a bad cough for a while but then again I got three horses every day to and so it was like okay is this hayfever is this a cold is this the regular life stuff, or is this whatever. So they tested me and I came up negative but she would. My wife is under Dr. today.

Grace is doing fine and she's really coming out of this thing now and she's done well.

She hasn't had to be hospitalized and not taking care of her through this process and you know the civil she told she's why he has a headache every so often, and he gets tired well caregiver for 34 years as part of the journey is having a headache only had two headaches but they're just convinced that 100% certain that I've got the COBIT 19 but that have built up anybody so they can test me on Monday. With this new abatis that has the you know that you could tell with her that the Anybody so forth and they can do that on Monday and they said, look, if you got them.

We want your blood and what that means is, is that they take stuff for me to distribute out to the masses means is that a lot of people who have TV preacher quality here just getting 888-589-8840.

I got a special guest on the phone that I wanted to have the top of the hour.

Here and that is Melissa Strickland she's a senior communications director for Samaritans purse, and you been reading a lot about what they're doing and I wanted to have her here on the show and talk about this talk about you know her journey personally through this. She's also a caregiver, but also just what's going on. The Samaritans purse there in Central Park, Louisiana, Tennessee and all over the place.

They're working the so Melissa good morning and welcome to show how you feeling today, good morning.

I'm a little worn out that you are our happy happy to be on one without. You are where physically right now.

I returned home to North Carolina yesterday I went to Park city with arcane mayor at the emergency field hospital that we have that to treat coronavirus patient know right now I am isolated and I in a corner of my home 14 days before my quarantine. Will I get it because I'm isolated myself as I take care my wife, who has it and now they say I have all my on NLRA to hear how I mean, I'm not symptomatic I'm blessed that she has been on my wife's a high-risk individual, and she said 80 surgeries, multiple pulmonary emboli and multiple diverse infections. Both legs amputated when she sees she's a high-risk individual. I didn't really have much in the way symptoms other than I had a persistent cough and and so I've been you don't think it okay to add. I didn't even have a fever and and so that's that's been my journey with it but now they're saying okay there's no way you could be in proximity to her like you are 24 semester caregiver and not get it. So were going to test your money with that new abatis. Did you guys have those test those have been tested not now. Not going on our site and so are I have not been tested. Like you I have a high-risk individual in my home. I had so even going to New York and carving was a big decision for and I took a lot of prayer and just a feeling of peace that we both knew that we unanimously had to have so that we feel good about the decision to go back in the end he said you know this is what God is calling you to do.

I feel that in my heart what God's gift.

If you did you know go and get pray that the Lord will protect our family and and protect me through it statement is grace. You have worked over in West Africa for years with a prosthetic limb ministry stating and in its taking her over into Africa.

You know it's that's that's no small thing in but have also come to realize that we use common sense know were all you equipped with some common sense here with some more than others, but evident that we follow good medical counsel with them when you're on the king's business. Your safety is the king's business and that's that's come the way we've we've adopted that is just okay were going to do everything in our power to be smart about this, but then we trust God that he is going to work through these things providentially. We don't we don't put into the test to do some stupid but at the same time. When I understand that that risk is part of it and this is this is part of the journey and so will I know that did not come easy to you guys when you got on the plane and went to New York that that must've been a very difficult thing for me personally it wise or difficult. It was a difficult you know I travel I've been with American purchaser 15 years and I've traveled around the world travel to earthquakes and growling and at you name it active after hearing the United States, tornadoes are going and even as I travel there's always some element of gallantry disasters on especially when it is a war zone or that kind of thing that this was a different risk because this one was one that I kicked possibly bring home and that's a real different kind of thing, knowing that this is something that I could affect my family so it was a much bigger decision whether you by the way we do in Tennessee with the tornadoes. I was not in Tennessee I have been with American purse on many many tornadoes Fokker but not that one in particular used weeks to live initially did we just moved out to Montana last summer but we were national for 35 years and then we fed the stuff going on. Louisiana submergence versus their normally, when you guys show up, you know it. It is a is probably a very deeply moving thinkers. People are so devastated and and to hear and see friendly voices and faces come in in the name of Jesus.

What you guys do. It's gotta be deeply rewarding but in New York you guys have been met with some some harsh responses not missing from the patients but from the environment there to talk a little bit about that what that what that does to your heart in and what are your thoughts on what you know I now I would say that there had there had been a small but very vocal group that had really waged war against us and that led disappointing and hurtful at the beginning because we get like were just there to help white wire hade a much ultimately now we we're bringing Jesus to Central Park, we know we are we are there share the love of Christ with people who are suffering thought we got a good, gotta go to quick break. Hold that thought.

We talked with Melissa Strickland from Samaritans purse. This is hopefully caregiver the speed Rosenberg 888-589-8840 will be right back a kid you're here on American radio, this is Peter Rosenberg. This is the nations of as a family caregiver and we are thrilled to have you with this. 888-589-8840 888-589-8840 if you want to be a part of the show were talking with Melissa Strickland from Samaritans purse. She is been on the ground in New York as they been battling against this virus and trying to minister to people in Jesus name. And not just trying to and I wanted to have them on the show this morning's talk about it.

I was so moved when in one of the presidents press conferences. He was talking they were asking about you all the people of faith and so forth.

The president interacts with Stella Franklin. In particular, Frank Graham and he said you know this is a man who loves what he does, then the president turned and looked at the press.

He said this is a man who loves Jesus that I thought I was up that was just a profound moment, and I knew that you guys Melissa were getting pushback from the small but very very vocal group that just want to create trouble and that's got to be difficult because you really are truly there to just help talk a little bit more about that. So I had dinner at you go to the break breaking because we have doctors and nurses in the hospital who were working 12 hour, seven days a week who are pouring themselves out pretty patient lighting top-notch medical care killing incredible love and compassion. Patient and they come from all over the United on the reason the reason that there there is fair faith. You know like we talked earlier about now praying and going and they frisked them fell because it's there, it's their Christian faith that has compelled them to come when no one else will cuddle and to see them under attack like that is truly heartbreaking but you know not necessarily surprising because we know that when we bring the light of Christ into any clay there's going to be opposition in the Bible tells us that that that that that first disciple experience that I watch different yet exactly the ultimate example write the ultimate and fell hard to at the door by but we have through much prayer just been able to walk one step at a time each day in and out and face that fire even mathematical factors facing the fire of the coronavirus.

Again, this was a very small but vocal minority that counteroffensive was not late, I it was there have been so many how many ordinary New Yorkers who have product cake and green thing that you know a Girl Scout troop that product cookies and just every night it happened, people gather around the perimeter of our hospital in Central Park at 7 o'clock every night and just applied these healthcare workers so we been patched by degenerate. You work and despite this challenge of these groups who who just truly hate us.

We have felt very warmly welcomed Voltaire well the good news is they don't know you enough to hate you, but they hate you serve and try When You Serve Is Able to Take Any Did Take That's the Whole Point and and You Know What I Look at the Example That His First Disciples Set for Us When They Were Persecuted Beat Number. Paul and Silas Is Beaten and Singing Hymns and so As You Guys Look to Those Individuals Is Your Model of Okay Were Going to Stay the Course. That's What I Wanted to Have You on the Show Because That Type of Bravery and Conviction That You Are Keeping Your Eyes Firmly Fixed on Christ. As You Minister to Other People and You Guys Are Elbows Deep into the Suffering of Not Only New Yorkers but of Our Country and around the World and in in the World. The World As a Is a Spiritual Entity Is Not Going to Understand This.

They're Not Going to Even like It. But As I Said Somebody Would You We Put Prosthetic Legs on Gracie's Fellow Amputees and I Said Talk I Talked about This with Frank at One Time We Were at Walter Reed Grayson Went up to Walter Reed A Lot to Meet with the Wounded Warriors in and We Were a Fellowship Say the Severe Bliss of the Silk Is Just You and Me Talking, but When Reagan Was Asking about Her Work in and We Start. I Said Frankly Because of the People Standing over There Looks like a Billingham Crusade Be Applied Backwards and He Did Quite a Letter Spot That the but I but It by One of Things Greece, There Came a Mistake, As We Treat People of All Faiths Doesn't Matter, or No Faith, Whatever, but It's Hard to Hate Someone Is Open Your Daughter Walk.

I Know and That's What We've Learned and We Just Stay on Mission Stay on Course and You Know We We Just Keep Doing What We Do and Were Not Responsible for Results Were Responsible Be Good Stewards Were Responsible 10 It Is. Stay on Mission for What God Is Done Let the Whole of It. I Can't Convert Anybody or Can't Change but His Heart and Put We Could Put a Leg on and You Guys Can Minister to Them. But Ultimately the Heart Is Way beyond Our Skills in This with the Holy Spirit Comes in so We Trust and and You Guys Are Doing This Beautifully and My Hat Is off to You.

I Know That the Listeners of This Audience Are Also Praying for You and What I Would Encourage Them to Continue Doing so and Go up to Samaritans Purse and Get Involved in Help This Work.

It's a Great Work That You Guys Do Every Time a Tour of the There's Any Kind of Disaster Anywhere You Guys to Show up Something Shelf Just Call Her on It like a Pack of Dogs on a Three Legged Cat Him and Y'all Just There and That Is Extraordinary and Ended the End of the Level of Volunteers and the Staff and Everybody Just Got Gas Mobile. As I Remember One Time I Was Somewhere I Saw One of Your Planes and Was Traversed. I Can Remember Where It Was and I Just Looked at That It Almost. I Was Just so Moved Because There You Guys Are and You're Doing It in. What Are Your Thoughts As You Interacted with People in New York Who Were Struggling with This, Who Were Suffering with This Did What Would You Take Away from That Personally Is You Just Watch Families and Individuals Go through These Things and What Would You Take from That Well Unlike Anything That I Have Called I Had the Great Privilege of Going into the War with the Medical Staff on Occasion and Work Night Shift with One of Them for the Full 12 Hours. There Are Not There Work and One Minute You Would Have Someone Who Was on a Ventilator and Appeared to Be Getting Better, or At Least Had Some Level of Strength and within the Hour That Personally Crashing and the Nurses and Doctors Which Is around Them and and Work Feverishly to Bring Them Back from the Brink and Then an Hour Later, That Person Would Open Their Eyes and Not Even Be Aware That That Had Just Happened to Them That to Walk into One of the and He Many People Check Going for Air. Just Gasping and Trail It. It Does Affect You. It Does Affect You and You Realize How Life Can Turn on a Dime a It's Just What We Are Really Just a Vapor and We Never Know When Our Time Has Come, and so It Just the Mission of Christ Is so Critical It's It's It's It's Just Another Reminder and I and I'm Reminded of That so Much. I Work That People Need That Help People Need That to to See Him and Know Him and Experience His Love and Forgiveness There. There Is a Tremendous Argentine Time for Me As a Caregiver Not Been Doing This for Long Time Now.

He Is First Attack. He Was Actually Struck Blind. His MS Came on Very Strongly and He Lost His Sight and He Called It His Road to Damascus Moment Because He Was in the Hospital and I Brought Him a Question for 20 Years Ago so There Were No I Found That Brought Them His IPod, and Which the Bible Still Have One of the Great I Don't Even I Didn't Even Edit That You Know We Loaded the Bible onto It and He Because He Couldn't See Anything. My Pastor Back in Nashville for Many Years.

Jim Bob Just Look Different. He Often Says to Me He Uses since Endlessly in a Great Statement. There's Nothing That He Does Not Leave into His Providence and His Software. And That's Comforting. A Lot Of People Get Real Weird about That They like. How Could. How Could It. I Think This Is Something That People Struggle with the Lack of a Good Loving God and Gracie, You're Missing Both Legs.

All These Because of Things up Her She and John Erickson Taught a Very Dear Friends and They Were Merciless We Can and You Know They've Been Friends for Years and between the Two of Them They Got Almost 90 Years of Disability, and If People Ask the Question All the Time You How Can You Trust in the Good Loving God Because They Don't Understand That There's Something Far Greater Than Amputation. There Something Far Greater Then Cove like Teens or Something Far Greater. The Quadriplegia That He Is Saved Us from a Herd. Max and Tito Say on the Easter Weekend, 19 Is a Is a Travesty.

It Is, It Is a Horrible Affliction, but the Virus of Sin Is a Disaster and That Is Something That We We We Don't We Don't Think This Way Because We Were's We Want to Feel Better in One of Things We Talked about on the Show for Freight for Family Caregivers Were Never Going to Feel Better, but A Lot Of These Things Gracie Serving Not to Feel Better. I'm Looking for Better Watch to Go through It but That's Not the Goal. The Goal Is Not to Feel Better, It's to Be Better Than Your Husband Has His Model That You Have Done That. What Changed with You What We Did, It Wouldn't Flip with You. I Know He Had to Sit There and up in the Hospital with More Than Listening to the Bible about IPod.

What about You What Flip with You Now Losing Everything That I Thought You Know Our Apartment in New York City. My Life My You Know My Letter Still Walking down the Street and You Know Weekend and Good Friends and I Had to Get a Little Heels to Know Just Kidding, I'm Just Kidding Just Kidding. Just One Time in Your Label for Life No Pictures of That Know and I Couldn't Stay in That Giving up Those Things and and and and Have Your Whole Life up Ended, I Get It Trying to Get Everything You Thought You Meaning and Purpose and Identity with Stripped Away Just Completely Stripped Away so You Know It When It Was Heart Ache and Suffering. But It Was Also Opportunity and He Was Opportunity to to Find My True Identity As a Child of God and That Was a Real Journey for Me and Actually I Think My Husband Thinks Robin Robinson.

Robinson, You Know, I Because His with Physically Devastating in the Way It Was Heat. He Got on Track A Lot Faster Than I Can Find the More Rebellious. At That but It Was a Journey for Me Take You Really Understand Where My Identity Was and Even Going Back to New York These past Three Weeks.

There Was This Sentence of Nostalgia and at First and Oh Gosh I Really Miss the Eddie and I Wish I'd Never Left Them in My Prayer Time. You Know the Lord Now Look What You Are Doing What You Have the Opportunity to Be Part of an Look at the Miracle You Would Have Missed out on an Angry Really Realigned by Thinking You Know Even That First Week for 50 Weeks Ago in New York When I Was Feeling Nostalgic Now I Don't Get Me Wrong, I Pray Every Day That Robinson Will Be Healed and I Still Believe That That Batted within the Lord Capacity. If That Is Well by but If It's Not His Will Then Then Our Prayer Is Just, You Know, Keep Us Steadfast in the Journey and Was Stunned, and Not so with Gracie about That Last Night She Never Turns out a Prayer for Healing. Johnny's Same Way and We've Had Lots of Conversation about This Bone Area and Put Them Privately and but I Saw Something Gracie Took a Picture of Her Last Night in Its Extraordinary Picture and Notice How Beautiful She She Is and This Is Woman Who Is Taking It on the Chin with A Lot Of Suffering.

I've Been There.

I've Been There 34 Years and More Hospital Rooms. I Want to Kill, but I Think the Difference Is, Is That It I Looked at John As a Picture Johnny Went When They Were Coming Showed We Face Time with All the a Look at These Two Women Who Have Grown in Beauty in the Midst of Tremendous Suffering.

Just Take a Moment to Go out or Just Google Johnny's Pictures or Gracious Pictures and You'll See Two Women Who Are Just Getting More Beautiful As They Age and I Think Part of That for Gracie. I Told Her That Is Total That She Has Made She Has Wrestled with This and Come to the Understanding That She Is Not Fighting with Christ to Deliver Her from This, but She Has Made Peace with the Fact That He's in This Wheelchair or in These Prosthetic Legs in the Suffering with Her and Because of That She's Not Striving for Him to Take This Affliction from Her but to Sustain Her in It and She Certainly Willing to Have Her Body Healed and Wants to, but She's Not Striving against It, and She Has Is Trusting God in It and since I Does the Same Thing with Your Husband and Now with You and with Me Way Back in the Back. As I Have a Slow Learner. But When We Come to the Point Where We Stop Fighting with God to Make It Better for Us and Realize That He Already Is in It with This Only Thing Is That We Will.

I is a family caregiver did you like the interview with Melissa and Samaritans purse with a great work that you can go out and and simply sincere with others by going up to our podcast we podcast the show we podcast special videos of music STUFF.

It's free and you can go out right now to follow along and subscribe and share this with people is a powerful message. Try to have interesting interviews on here and perspectives and things to help strengthen you along your journey as a caregiver.

Now, as I say these things right now for those you know distorting my wife has virus. She was tested positive for she struggled through it she's come through it. She's doing okay she hasn't had to be hospitalized with taking care of her here in the home, but now they're convinced that I have it and so test me with that new anybody test on Monday to see if I have anybody's.

I have not been very symptomatic. Other than diagnosing it really persistent cough that I have ordered a cough button here for the show and it hasn't got here on the word is but we live in the in the in rural Montana. So sometimes the dog sleds take a while to get here with mail but they don't test me see if I have anybody's forward and if I do they want my blood and they gonna distribute those anybody's out to other folks and then the good news is a lot of people to get great TV preacher quality here out of that disc and so it's it's it's quite a journey to go through these things and his caregivers. This show is all about you staying healthy and strong male by cough could be the covert, 19 it could be the fact that I get in the barn every day and the horses. I don't know where to find out on Monday so stay tuned for next week about that let you know for next week show. I haven't had a fever and every now that I get a headache in that I get tired to get up in a caregiver for 34 years what you expect.

That's counterpart of the jury you mean I would imagine as a caregiver. Your card and use to finish periodically and you laid out after Starbucks of the Bimini to turn off cable news more little help by headache. That's probably that's probably it.

So I just appreciate her coming on and talk about what to do to New York. Which would you commit to pray for them doing them in the munition everywhere there's a disaster. They show up and so I was just really moved when I saw the president at the one of those press conferences that have turned into basically WWE smack down and it's comforting to watch this because these reporters just keep showing up for more of me. They just love a beating and it's but out of presence. Toby Franklin Graham and he said this is a man who loves what he does and he turned and looked at him directly at the reporters that he said in this is a man who really loves Jesus thought wow, that was it was very moving and and so I think we as believers have responsible to pray for them and support them if we can then in whatever way we can do. They're doing it. They show up and they do this in the privilege of meeting Franklin. We did service with he and his team some years back at Walter Reed to mark the 50th anniversary of his father's big Crusade there at Walter Reed, and they came back in and Gracie saying for that and it was it was real meaningful time and these are people who are serious people who do a serious work and I need your prayers and support. So I would. I would highly recommend doing that and but but do take advantage of the podcast and send this interview out to folks. Let them know about it I think will be a source of encouragement if it was encouraging to you today then go out and subscribe to it. You go to hope the caregiver.com. It's all there. Hope for the caregiver.com. You could see some of the others we had Johnny Erickson taught last week. We've had Shonda Pierce recently we've had Larry the cable Guy. And so we would try to do things that help strengthen enlightened caregivers hearts through tough times and I think you know what, if it helps a caregivers can help someone else. So share with others@hopeforthecaregiver.com and while you're there, look around the site.

See what you can glean from it and if you can be involved.

What were doing support over doing do that it involved and it for any amount. Send a copy Gracie CD (Homer in Oklahoma for the exploits along how you feel. Well, your radio show interview with Melissa elevated my spirit where's my spirit vitally. I am encouraged those of the living room anymore her witness because Franklin Graham merchants purse is a group of volunteers not going out into the field to have a resume or a compensation structure to help while putting loops to gospel temperature enough for her to get her ventilator this morning. Thank you. Well, was that she wasn't.

She just is a inspiring and is insightful and it is meaningful as you would would imagine they would be only was just it was it was you can just tell it's almost like breathing to these people to minister and forward and that there just the just extraordinary group of individuals who do this and now you know knowing when you go five tornado or something like that you not dealing with all the politics of it. But now they get this very vocal group that is come out with just just hate NM and members of Congress to join their voices with and there's so much hate that we have. We that that is just bit unleased in our society.

And so we have a responsibility to help support these people in a way we can with our prayers with our financial support. Whatever we can do. I think we have a responsibility to do it because there literally walking into war sums and in their bringing the hope of the gospel and that in a profound tangible way. So Homer, thank you for saying that a new behave yourself out there in Oklahoma right now I'm selling my feet got a lively way. That's a plus. I told him somebody sibling with a cell. Gracie was out walking after a long time of the seat had problem with her limbs and this it is so good to see another fleet invested at her feet on her. Okay, that was funny to listen. Homer, thanks so much for the call and keep listening.

Thank you very much for taking the time to call Simone right. I and this is what the show is all about is strengthening and equipping you with with tangible help is a caregiver.

What is it always looked like. It's hard to know it is truly hard to know, and I speak fluent caregiver here so I want to make sure you have in your in your hands and in your heart's something that is pointing you to safety and okay we were dealing with. This is a nation that were dealing with these these terrible things.

It's very real and personal, it's personal and my family mail. It doesn't get much more personal forceps that it does right mail and Gracie keep still man denial that supply don't feel what's different about it when she said well you got it and so evident may be a carrier.

I don't know what I knows but other caregivers right now understand that we are at risk for this and it's important that you keep your immune system strong.

And I do that by the way, and I work hard you work hard to eat healthy and drink a lot of water, vitamin C you not take out some nutraceuticals that that really helped me a lot. You can see more about that. It hopefully care.com and whatever I do, you know I'm trying to be active and healthy. So because if I'm not healthy. What happens to Gracie and if you're not healthy. If you're not, whatever. See your level and it's always about stewardship always about you being a good steward of you, and during this time of her quarantine.

I have over 400 episodes on the podcast.

Take advantage of listen to it but we try to be good. If you have a lot of stay that comedians that come on the show we try to do a lot of things that are going to help strengthen and equip you for this journey. Keeping a lighter heart keeping a sense of humor about the swords. These are important things don't think that there not because they are. You don't survive something as long as Gratian. I have without keeping a sense of humor and it it's it's really important that that we do that and I remember when I first started doing radio Jeff Foxworthy totally makeable left beef. You know more than most how difficult this journey is and they need to have that pressure release valve of laughter not stupid laughter where were just, you know, laughing insanely but but we could we could have a lighter heart in this, even while we face difficult challenges.

We've got plenty of tears, but do we have a good supply of laughter in our hearts, do you have that you know and and that's why I do what I do on the show. That's why I'm here is to help us all is caregivers get to a place of safety because of our hearts and our heads are squarely and they get that way that our wallets, our bodies, jobs, everything. But if we can get our hearts or handwriting. The rest of us have a rest of her life has a fighting chance to make terrible financial decisions.

If you hit a square, so this is why we do what we do here on the show in a very grateful to American family and I'm grateful to you for giving me an hour of your time on Saturday. Hopefully flip to better the hope for the caregiver.care.com see that's what he thinks. Caregivers that are geared
