Hey this is Mike Swick from if not for God podcast our show stories of hopelessness turned and I hope your chosen Truth Network podcast is starting in just seconds.

Enjoy it, share it, but most of all, thank you for listening and for choosing The Truth Podcast Network. You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com. Welcome to finishing well brought to you by Cardinal guy, certified financial planner belonged to child best-selling author and financial planner helping families finish well over 40 years of finishing well will examine both biblical and practical knowledge to assist families in finishing well, including discussions on managing Medicare IRA long-term care life insurance and investments and taxes.

Now let's get started. Finishing well welcome to finishing well today on child today show sounds immediately like a fishing well but I actually love the time was called spousal benefits access to do it so security spousal benefits, but you know and the whole concept of spousal benefits. I don't know that it is taken me a lot of years to walk with Jesus to realize all my spousal benefits that we are the bride of Christ and like if you think you have so security spousal benefits. You ain't seen nothing that one of the really great spousal benefits, you may not be aware of that, I will just throw it at the beginning of the show is that it says in Leviticus that if a wife makes a vowel or or make goes into a deal of some kind that the husband had the right to break the deal long as you thought about this but Jesus has the right to break your deals now that that becomes a critical aspect when you realize that Satan has gotten you into a lot of bad deal on the bad bills it is that he gets me into all the time is he'll get me to make an agreement like my wife always does that, you know she always you know is going to get on to me about washing my hands when I walk in the front door.

Since covert and NC anytime that you hear the word always or never. That's often coming from Satan because Jesus doesn't use those words. Now if I make that agreement. Like yeah my wife always.

I can be in a fight with her. Inside the 22nd, but here's a spousal benefit that Jesus can break that deal like I'm not going to make that agreement with statements is absolutely true that my wife loves me and she wants me to do better and so she is she thinks I need wash my hands right this minute. It may is not a condemnation on Robbie Gilmore feels like that that trying to break that agreement.

Unfortunately, even if I made it formally with with same. One of my spousal benefits is hey Jesus, you know like I break that agreement and so but where did you talk a little bit more about that this time throughout the show because I can't believe the good, the parallel there is between spousal benefits when it comes to Social Security and the spousal benefits we have is the bride of Christ on its awesome will in so today were going to talk about Social Security spousal benefits and this is your earthly spouse talking about here in just a few weeks ago. Somewhere between two and three. We have blogs that we do every week, based upon what we talk about on the radio show and the same thing in the book and it's the same thing in our newsletter, but then we do a blog and Mackenzie does these blogs, along with me and we had one to three weeks ago that just blew up online. Just all of a sudden were getting 800 hits a day for several days and we've still getting three, 400 a day and most of our other blogs.

We we we we stretch to get 100, 200 hits on the blog since they been up there and this one's been up there for six months.

Anyhow, so that's Immediately going to get our attention were marketers and we want we want to see where all this is, and obviously somebody has read that particular blog somebody did was hearing the news business or another blogger somebody has promoted that are attached it to their article and that's kinda cool. You know, with some driving this and we can figure out who that is and I just can shut the frustration of that office is it doesn't really matter and vibrant sure that it's God at work leading people to our stuff, but what it told me is the next time we talk about Social Security. We need to talk about what was in that blog which is spousal benefits now.

Incidentally, we had a number of people go on our website and ask us questions ask for information and so here my people, and they are all excited about that and as well as I am is it when somebody goes in search ask us questions and they might become a client when you look further. A lot of these people that wrote in were somewhat bitter people and conniving people where they were just trying to like one of them.

At its worst was somebody just really asking like a little with the sky and have been living with them for like six years and were really a common-law spouse and I met my arms common-law spouse can I still get his Social Security. If I leave him that's a cook way when you said that you know it. It just flipped a switch of my mind to think in all my goodness. I wonder how many people out there think that there common-law spouse of Jesus and not legally married, you know you haven't really completely taken or how many people are really that they're not thinking that there thinking that they're the spouse of Jesus, the bride of Jesus in their but they really are the common-law spouse because they been living with them. They're just not married to, and there's the real issue so you know.

Similarly, by this is a critical thing to know in your own heart. How do I know that I'm actually the bride of Christ at and near the Bible gives us lots of ways to know that, but it is its Blessed assurance at and how do I know that I have in fact accepted him as my Lord and Savior.

How I know. In fact, that I do believe on him for everlasting life and believe that he died for my sins and I've accepted those things and you know other people add other things to it that they think you got to do that. Actually go against so, and although some things that that you need to settle but if you're on Social Security and you don't need to settle over Social Security because if you going to national security. The question is can be a big fat no means Social Security is regulated by federal law and as far as I know the federal law doesn't have such things.

Common-law spouses that's in the state law is different in every state is to recognize marriage when it didn't formally exist, but by the fact that the people of been cohabitating so we leave that one alone is really not important for the content of the show and what I thought do is we would just kinda jump into. So how does Social Security define spouse and what I can tell you is if you are right now. If you're married to him or her. If you're married right now legally legally valid marriage certificate is there to make you by the way, when you get the spousal benefits. If you're going in there without your spouse there to make you bring in a marriage certificate to prove that's why you hung on to this. Thank you for all these years with as one of the reasons but nonetheless is if you're married right now and you have a spouse and you can prove it, then you are spouse, but that's those are not usually the people asking the questions is pretty self-evident. So in order to be if your spouse is deceased, severe winter widower or your divorce then you gotta follow some rules to be considered a spouse Social Security so I thought if I just outline that is what is a spouse when you're not currently married house that defined by Social Security and it's it's this simple. You need to have been married for the divorces for 10 years or more.

So you know if you were married for six years and got divorced. Then you can't claim on that other persons you're on your on your ex-spouse is Social Security. But if you were married for 10 years or more and you're now divorced, then you've met the first criteria going then the second criteria is if you remarried before age 60. Then you can claim your new spouse after you're married to him or her for however long, but by the fact of your remarried before 60 that cancels out that prior spouse, you could been married to the dude for 20 years divorced and then you got married to the seconded 56 which is canceled out the benefits of the first.

You can't claim as a spouse, saying that the second marriage lasted like six months and your divorced since you married that second person got canceled out the first person okay but is it 60 or over when the new marriage started then you can go back on that ex-spouse cutting. So if we try to take this as a living example, say that me know. My wife married a guy after she was 60. Hugh was only making $20,000 year.

But when she was married to me for those 10 years, and I was I had a much substantial more substantial income so she would rather take 1/2 a mind and the half of the new husband correct. Okay, it's more than that she's gonna get credit not just for the 10 years you were married. She's getting a credit on your earnings record up to this point.

She's going to get credit for your earnings record over your whole life even though she was only married you freaking let me clarify that I'm still married to Tammy say I think of them talk about this for real well images.

The world we live in and so so that's that's the rule with divorces now with when you're married to a spouse and the spouse is deceased, then eat the 10 year rule doesn't necessarily implies that you could be married to somebody for four years and then they died. The real key is his or did you remarry and did you remarry before 60 so if you had somebody that was married to 22 person and then that person died four years into the marriage and then few years after that. Then they remarried and that was before 60 than that cancels out the guy died his earnings record but if you remain single until at least 60 then you can claim against the dude who passed away four years in your marriage.

I mean those are the rules. Now what is that get you so I was going to really need to cover that in the second half of the show. I'm a tell about a couple of clients list of recent that have come in one of them came in just because of this article, so morning, the power to work so spousal benefits, you know, I maybe it's time to evaluate those Jesus spousal benefits crisply neither their way, way, way more than you'll ever get from Social Security. But when we come back we'll move working to get into those things. We worry Manning remind you that what we talked about today is found in Hans's book the complete cardinal guide to planning for and living in retirement. It's there cardinal guide.com get the whole book just email Hans, are you gonna PDF of the tavern timeout today, which is Social Security so we got so much more, on finishing well stated, Hans and I would love to take our show on the road to your church, Sunday school, Christian or civic group. Here's a chance for you to advance the kingdom through financial resources and leveraging Hans expertise and qualified charitable contributions veterans aid and attendance IRA Social Security care and long-term care.

Just go to cardinal guide.com and contact Tom to schedule a live recording of finishing well at your church Christian or civic group. Contact Tom to cardinal guide.com that's cardinal guide.com welcome back to finishing well today were talking spousal benefit thought about all your spousal benefits you have as being the bride of Christ, but let me just tell you that there's a big supper, and to get some really cool clothes like, like, way better than anything that you ever experienced with Social Security but but but Hans we've got some stories with that with that. We want to get into, or maybe a little more the details, but I just a little bit of the disease. You don't want be planning your marriages times and the distances that you remarry to be wishing the laughing is a Christian radio show. Over the year, getting married, staying married remarrying all around Social Security benefits need to be at EDB plan and those around your life and with God and then were just telling you when you get into your 60s in your sent. Now the Social Security Administration or sit down with me and were planning things out what the rules are because there's a lot of folks troubled by this. And in the dark with the rules so were just trying to get the rules across to you and then of course we want to be the most help. We can be of working those rules to your biggest benefit SMS not to mention that we should say it's not always the white that has you know it could be the husband oriented, that if any of those you know where the husband was the smaller and common. This was critical to to what happened with him, his wife passing away, or whatever. So this works both ways. So in the case of a current spouse were used. This married you been married for a while and for a divorced spouse where you met the criteria where you were married for 10 years or more and then you get divorced and then you stayed single until you release 60 you're eligible to apply for spousal benefits on the same status as if you were still married him or and in order to get the spousal benefits are some rules here me number one, he or she needs to file for their Social Security and if this is a divorced spouse, you don't really have any control over that. If you know if this is your current spouse you do have some amount of control, but with a divorced spouse, you know it.

He asked her she has to have applied for their own Social Security in order for you to be able to apply for years under the spousal benefit of their so if you meet all those criteria.

Now they just can compare the two. It may be that you got nothing here because if your benefit on your own work record is higher than half of his or hers because that's all you going to get with the current spouse. As you can get half of their benefit. It's not going to come out of their benefits is can be matched by Social Security and if that is less than your own benefit on your own record and were talking about nothing here for, but conceivably we could be talking about something because when he or she dies I want to assume this is that he Say is an example that his benefit is 3500 a month so we are talking about him was the primary earner, your benefit is thousand month he's applied for now, you're coming in and applying as the spouse or the ex-spouse done matter either one in your applying on his record and half of his is what I say.

His was 35700. So then the ears would be 1750 so you would then you get something.

Did you get 1750 and then instead of your 1000. Of course, that's a better deal for Butler say was the other way around. Let's say that your benefit was 1750 and half of his was a thousand will then you would want take a spousal benefit when yours is more than that changes in the future because if he dies before you do, then you're able to take his full benefit for the rest of your life.

So even if this doesn't benefit you right now, you're better off on your own record.

Still need to get it into the Social Security system that you're his spouse. This is irregardless if he's remarried or just say some of the questions I get is is that there's there's people were he's remarried to wife number two.

You're still single and then your thinking he's going to resist you because she's getting the spousal benefit being wife number two, you're going to get it to and so security's gonna pay out twice and Mr. is now that comes out to him and it doesn't come away from her. These benefits are not costing your ex-spouse anything or their current spouse. Okay, so it would be nice if you could get through the kids. If there are any that you can get him to cooperate in this and you know we we help a lot of people. Through this we call the Social Security administration from our office and then we talked on the little bit and refax things in it will be glad to help you out. Then we need to talk about widows and widowers so I just when we ran the show that because the blog is gotten all the hits she was back in January we put on Facebook and lady who is in our wedding. She stood up with us. We got married 35 years ago a friend of ours. I did get married to Hans. He's tough round is what yeah so I don't want to name her because I don't like to name clients on the show but her husband who was died in 1998 and she's never remarried. She try to run his business for a few years, but it was just a unique any sheet. She's not a very good way financially now and she's the same age as my wife is and grade school together and so she just turned 60 and she listened to the show and she's sick. She called Rhonda up and she said can I get's note deceased spouse Social Security benefits because I'm now 60 were both now they turned 60 in the same month which was February know they didn't say sheet she just turned 60. So anyhow, she just can run of this residence is have talked John's event. I called her from Rhonda's phone a few hours later and I just walked her through the thing and then then she she kept her own way. Well, Mike didn't. He didn't make enough money he made a lot of money but he died several years ago when we are doing all these tax shelters and I said well Susie, you know, you still might want to check it out and she simple.

My benefit of the more than his, and just all this stuff and so I said we might want so I convinced her to check it anyhow. She called us crying with joy she got $1800 and change a month starting at 60 which is taking it early. As a widow and she can get that for the rest of her life. So that's a that's a happy story that is stored. It's a very happy start and I am just thinking when I look at all the action and the interest that comes up in this is that we can really talk about this regularly throughout the year. We can talk about it enough because these are benefits that people are not aware of their not aware of just even the simple rules to make him qualified, sometimes those rules actually work in your favor like they did for her and then furthermore, when it comes to divorces or even with you know his death were some of these deceased spouse is deceased and spent many years ago, just poking around and all that people are reluctant to come forward like she wasn't just say I need this benefit and I'm entitled to it because of my spouse that I was married in a bubble of all of Obama.

So you got a lot of things stopping this I said, I think it's good for us to talk about this in the show anybody that wants to talk about a specific situation. A lot of people did on these blogs as they just went on Cardinal guide.com looked around a little better than eggs that were taken there by the blogger by the article and then you there's a place for you to just writing your question. You put your email address or phone number or get a phone number on there.

Just give us a call and will be glad to talk your little business. See if we can point you in right direction at which the it, you know, I think that I had this discussion with my brother didn't want to just who is turning 62 and and and I think he brought it up if I can't just come and go, take it in a because it's gonna be in a lot.

I've done the math and I talked to the guy and it's gonna be a lot better for me to take this memo will await bro diving they not do this financial so with a good friend of mine on shallowness and had you considered that if you take it early. You not only affect that for the rest of your life you you you take it in effect for the rest of Debbie's life, life life, his wife's life and she was like my wife a little bit younger than Mark and Mike wow this could really cost you some money and he was like I had no idea will see there so many little things inside of this decision when you're gonna take your Social Security. I mean, it's definitely worth doing your homework and will absolutely and not just doing it at home. Based on what uncle Ralph said you could be collecting that check for the rest your life and there to be adjusting it upward for inflation and then you know when we get the check. The most that can be then we can plan we know that for sure and then is just like we talked about last week on the show.
