We must not, we must not allow even more children. We have to step up and make sure that our kids are protected his family policy matters, a weekly radio show and Comcast from see family designed to better inform listeners about the critical issues of the day and encourage you to be voices of persuasion from family values in your community.

Today we bring you part two part shell with winter television Council, so your question is about getting work with and confident in that most parents would volatile the answer is yes and they have a constitutional First Amendment right to produce the content, but I think it is outrageous that the public credit Corporation like Netflix would market and profit. They would profit from children who watch the show and is now being linked to increased rates of suicidal children while I've seen that and I have seen that show 13 reasons why and I I agree with you wholeheartedly in one of the consultant. My biggest concerns is how the revenge that she gets really aggrandize is suicide. It's like if you are to do you know date to commit suicide.

Look at how you get back up at all those people hurt you.

And of course we know that's just unrealistic to to portray suicide in that way in.

I think this we could probably agree that this is a message that is incidental in this particular instance. It's a it's a hurtful message but I can't imagine that Netflix or anyone who produced it.

Their goal was to get more kids to commit suicide. What about some of these people that are putting messages in that are specifically designed to sway kids to think differently about things that may disagree with what their parents believe all would know for Dr. and what I've learned about mold. Nobody in Hollywood. I don't think wakes up in the morning thinking. Gosh, how can I write her children what to do. Thank is how can I get more people across the country around the world to agree with me. To think the way I think to believe what I believe to hold similar values I hold and I've even spoken with our producers. Creators of the content here.

Hollywood who may not have understood the impact they really have a younger age maturely realized while I know I really do have an impact way to shape values to shape culture and the ability to shape culture from Hollywood is huge. It's not that you see one show and then children grow up and act in a certain way. But when it's a reputed know it's like the old will build constant beating of the drum. It wears you down. And when when children especially were sold so a vulnerable note to content and content helps with your values when they become desensitized to certain same themes. They see that the water parents may think that XYZ is bad. If the media culture assignment XYZ is not bad enough, the way most other people think you know it's because of the child, especially in adults, look to think all my bills wrong about that.

Or maybe my parents were wrong about that and and and what they think is that is really okay so that's kind of how Hollywood is able to do that sometimes it's intentional. Sometimes it's not intentional or just happens to be the luck of the current consensus that the letter shows Mike contained in a similar content so I don't think it is always by design.

Sometimes it's by design followers by design, but it is another so much content out there that asks us to think similarly it requires parents were on top of things and making sure that the parent can communicate with the child about about what those messages are mentioned adults and how I can have an influence on them as well.

I sometimes think as adults we give ourselves a pacifist like well you know my values are set. You know my ideology is strong. I can subject myself to some of this and not be influenced by it, but I think I think sometimes we are wrong about that Army you type of issue cuts across every political every political belief on the element on the spectrum of political beliefs you have folks from every angle of temporary from every angle of the spectrum that hold beliefs and the use media to encourage people to think their way. Politically I think it's more political than it is on the social side but but what's the reality is that even adults are impacted by what they see in the entertainment media. When you look at how is media paid for primarily and I think the number was $80 billion last year that was spent on television in the United States by advertisers, $80 billion across the broadcast keyboard local and national television, $80 billion was spent to change the behavior of the viewer. Nobody spent a dollar in advertising, not expecting that that will watch their commercial would would not change their views on something.

Go buy a new product go try go on a trip to the left. Go on by a car that would've otherwise no direct type of car, so the ability to influence the viewer doesn't and when the computer commercials over and Michelle comes back on the ability to influence viewer is while the TV set is on empty for watching others in impact. It's happening and so were the child.

We know that from from scientific evidence academic proof and the parents instinct that was a child there is an increased impression ability it. We also as adults we are shaped by what we see on TV. We hold beliefs based upon what what we see in the media that we either believe to be true or or think is reasonably true. Sometimes we can cognitively dismiss things we believe are untrue, but we are shaped by what we see and it's important for parents also to set a good example for themselves and for their kids about making good media consumption choices listening to a radio show and cast from the same family you can sign up to receive and to listen to the show online resources in the voice that explains anyone website family Martin singing mentioned ads and of course if you watch Netflix or Hulu. There are no ads, but that doesn't mean that what were watching is not influencing the kinds of other products or entertainment that's going to be produced right. How are we how we kind of voting by watching things on some of the streaming services will one thing when we were campaigning against the washer over the last year or so. We actually asked the shareholder meeting we own stock in corporations and cilia CEOs of the Board of Directors of publicly traded companies to defend their actions publicly for think they do that we believe might be harmful to children. We asked the CEO of Netflix at the shareholder meeting your lips in a prepared question, but he read it. The question was how could you possibly justify 13 reasons why and he said well the popular show in the water that they don't want to. We thought that was a very arrogant answer, of course, I would have to watch it if you don't want to pop the problem is children are watching parents are totally unaware children are watching and some children are taking steps to her consultants to do so. So just because they don't have advertisements that are supposed to know for the content and influence the behavior of the viewer. The reality of the shows do have an impact.

I was with a was with the creator of TV programming not not that long ago couple weeks ago and he was dismayed that many children today believe that when they see history and science on TV they believed to be real is somebody who believes in education and he was very deeply disappointed that the kids today seem to believe that what they see on TV in terms of history and science is what's real and so you know have platforms that have no advertising whatsoever.

The content of the show is helping to shape views, especially for children, but even for adults, and I think it's also important for us to realize as adults that when we watch things. They are people that are taking note. So if we watch a lot of certain show they're going to be held day Netflix, Hulu sees that that's popular they'll do more of that. You know Emily with click on things on YouTube. When we watch things we don't think anybody knows what were watching well there people that are watching in their taking note and basically voting by watching those things. So I think that's important for adults to understand even after the kids go to bad that you are influencing just by clicking on something what's going to be produced potentially next year for several very very important hundreds you're making you know when people are watching something on the computer on the cable in the privacy of your own home, your Internet provider knows what websites you go to your cable company knows what channels are watching you and keep that information to themselves but but they know exactly what you're watching and and that will trigger them to market more content just like that to you and it will encourage folks like Netflix to produce and distribute more contact like that to you as well so I really recommend that that observation. So just to wrap up what are some takeaways for parents who are listening to this, as far as what they need to be mindful of I in regard to what their kids are accessing entertainment wise.

The most important thing to say what's to take way of our time here today I'm grateful this time with you. Couple things. First and foremost parents you you need to be aware of what your children are consuming. You are so careful about the food they're eating your careful about being safe. Safety is so important to making sure that their seatbelts are buckled and you you do something slick for your children are healthy and safe. It must must extend into the media consumption of your children.

There's no decades of ciphers over stuff can be harmful. Hollywood when it's best when it's good to know was there. When they produce something positive and inspiring. Nobody is better but there's an awful lot of stuff it's really dangerous.

The second part of that equation know is that you can't fight City Hall by yourself. You can't fight Hollywood by yourself for the parents told in councils here. We have almost a million asked members. People have joined us at some point over our history because parents and parents were concerned that that the children to their are being thrown under the bus but Hollywood. The collateral damage with explicit content that supposed to go to to adults. The children are finding it easier and easier to be able to get a hold of that explicit content parents talking councils here to help you fight the fight to help you navigate the choppy media waters of Hollywood and come to a website parents TV.org parents TV.org you can learn you can you can be more informed about media consumption for your family would give you recommendations will help you raise your voice and be an activist.

We must not, we must not sit back silently and allow for this is a constant become even more explicit and even more more marketed toward children.

We have to step up, speak up, speak out and make sure that our kids are protected. It's the innocence of a child.

What more important when there are developing them in their cognitive abilities let children be children. Hollywood no seemingly uncaring about that but the parents talking councils here. Please come to our website.
