It's Father's Day weekend and there's a new movie being released this weekend.and theaters, but available on demand. You know how that's working these days. It's a movie called selfie dad and the writer producer of the film, Brad Silverman says this is a comedy about dad's stepping up to be spiritual leaders in their home at the heart of the story. It's really a call and try to really invest in their families invest in their wise investing their children, essentially by being shepherds through the word of God in their homes wherever you are in your walk with God sharing what you're learning God giving you what you need through the word of God and sharing that with your family. This is family like today.

Our hosts are Dave and Wilson about the painting and find us online at family life. They.com so yup for something this weekend. Father's Day weekend something that will make you laugh that'll make you think that'll make you smile to talk about a new movie called selfie dad that's coming up. Stay with us and welcome to family life to. Thanks for joining us. I don't know how many balusters know this, but if they don't know by now that I figure this out.

We like movies right though we all like that not all movies are God glorifying that there's something about stories that take me into an understanding of humanity and understanding what's going on people's lives. I remember reading a quote years ago from a guy named Ken Geyer and he said good art is like a stepstool in a room with high windows.

He said when you step onto it you get a view you weren't able to get before.

That's good and I'm going to movies in the past that have given me a view on life that I hadn't gotten before because I get entered into other people's stories, so to Bob you know what happened to me what I guess you had every move, every single I will download it and what happens what I know to my wife tell you cry every single movie, whether it's something very emotional and gripping. Or it could be firehouse five firehouse dog is a real story. My son rings and of all time. I watched it on an airplane you as you cry little dog came back to the virus anyway because what you said story and rips my heart and I emotionally moved me.

I love it. You are not a crier in real love is the tension in life with me through this email, we just separated is true, but in a movie theater with the lights out now, seriously, is there something that when art is done so well excellent and takes you on a journey. It always me has the ability to move the soul. It does, and were always happy when we can come to our listers and say there's a new movie that is coming out that is is going to move you. This is one that was headed for theaters, but of course we know what's going on there so it's opening this weekend video-on-demand. It's called selfie dad we've Artie seen it and I cried and cried and dad just cited you look at me like that since selfie dad. I watched it but I don't think I choked up watching that you need to get in touch with your motion, I would selfie dad will talk about it. Brad Silverman is joining us on family life to the writer and director of selfie dad welcome Bob is great to be a Brad has been on family life today before because you wrote and produced a movie back a decade ago called no greater love. That's right. And then a few years later movie called grace unplugged and theaters great and it's been a while, but this is your new movie starring our friend Michael Junior, the one and only yes Michael Junior in the starring role and it's a comedy right we should also mention you brought a friend with you so pastor Adam Tyson is here welcome to family life to going to be here will will explain the in why you brought Adam Lester okay sounds like some big secret. It's not what he says. Can you give us give us a rundown against movie so selfie different from like a plot standpoint you mention Michael Junior he's just very brilliantly funny guy is a story of this easy plays his former comic Kim, and I was having this midlife crisis. And so, like anybody having a midlife crisis. If your former comic you start a YouTube page.

In a sense it's kind of a little bit of art imitating life. Let's not talk about the why is that Brad explained that I think I sent you a video years ago today a day you used to do some stand-up comedy right it is a long time to grace unplugged and selfie to make me cry, yet there was a gap of my career with them a lot. If you must know grace that was designed. It made me cry so my coaching places guy and and is this midlife crisis. He starts his YouTube page. Now playing his foil. His boss is Shonda Pierce yes Shonda. Now, if you know Shonda, she's a genius comic as well, but Michael and John together. The odd couple. It's almost like it was when the camera wasn't rolling. As you can imagine the world is crying Michael he starts each page and it works. He became easy to sort of business comedy dude on social media to really try to get rid of this midlife crisis to to capture that long-lasting of being a comic right at the heart of the story. It's really a call out to dad's to try to really invest in their families invest in their wise investing their children, essentially by being shepherds through the word of God in their homes and is said to be a pastor like the dude sit next to me here.

I just wherever you are in your walk with God sharing what you're learning God giving you what you need through the word of God and sharing that with your family up into a spiritual leadership role in the home and that sounds intimidating right to a dad spiritual leadership. I can be a spiritual leader, really spiritual guide, but you're saying it's not that complex.

You can just live your faith out loud in front of your family and bring them into what he meant that because part of the reason why you know the first part of what this film is about. It's this comedy because it is sort of it so I think at some level just looking at my own frailties and failures and weaknesses and journey and just cut and since making fun of that in a sense you know just saying hey, maybe these things that I've struggled with and try to illustrate those in a comedic way through the brilliant Michael Junior and then maybe other people can relate to that and maybe soften the awkwardness or tension is a yeah now in this comedic setting. Let's step up her game be the dads Republican and I would say the interesting thing is early in the movie.

I see myself in Michael's character and I see a lot of men in my church and Michael's character simply as the Bible. The back of the car and I don't give away the movie, but done pick it up for another week Sunday to Sunday and I like that is most men, not just some most in a manner journey that this selfie dad goes on the course you got explain selfie database here this title and what does that mean I had no idea until I saw it in the YouTube channel like there is some of the selfie dad mean something that is sort of it sort of a play on kind of the concert adjusted this this self-centered world that we live in and everything about this particular story was just really looking my own my own weaknesses and see men just what is my motive for doing this.

Why am I getting up in the morning.

What is my mission in life as a human being is a dad is a father as a follower of Christ, and sadly so much of it is centered around self evidenced by this barrage of culture that is too self focused. So it sort of a just a play on that in and in the negative. If you will sort of making fun of it at the same time in the movie Michael's married, he's got two kids you're watching them kind of be isolated from one another. The teenage daughters kinda start to explore her boundaries and think about the yellow sun is an a in his own YouTube world and an online gaming and that's what life is all about. He and his wife are drifting toward isolation.

She's frustrated with his lack of spiritual leadership. I do have to tell you, there's little Easter egg in here that we just we howled over movie. So one of the actors interesting and right here is Karen Abercrombie Wright, who played the older grandma woman in war room who kept saying you need to be fighting for your husband and she's she's that character right yeah she's in this movie is a friend to Michael's wife sure and at one point she's she's asking this life. Do you pray for your husband right then the wife says well you not as much as I should. Karen Abercrombie says you wrote this trip. I vaguely remember this. Have you seen the movie will and how does the wife respond.

I don't really like Christian Karen Abercrombie staring at her like what this great moment in here because it's a Christian filled grade the characters they got a like Christian films to Karen Abercrombie who is in more what I just would love that I drive in the in the in the in the right audience.

It can be the showstopper in the wrong audience and no one gets it. I love that I love what are they laughing that's associated even the realness and how you are authentic where the main character starts getting enough starts verbalizing his faith to his family nurse kid sitting at the table and thinking oh here we go the kid to consider the engineer see think I'm thinking father that the kids are like can we leave now. I like that you are pretty honest and real that that can be very typical that the hardest thing for me to do is write the female characters, the wife because my wife is passed out to me.

My friend who knows my wife's she's not like frail and we can follow little boys like me like Billy Nina, she's so steady and everything having said that what I noticed in her was that if I did like for example time with you to pages that if I do like a performance right you I do a comedy thing I do is show her.

She watches a movie I make my Look at honey this is amazing this is great. She's again notes that that that's really good, no, no, I like to try to portray that when he's doing his career he's it's polished it's good it's solid and she's like okay but he's fumbling through barely trying to try to disciple his kids in the word and in his mind he's not doing a good job he can get it right, but it's that that she's absolutely falling in love with. Yes she says she so attracted to trying to lead.

He feels like he's failing but she's like you're eating right. I love the fact that there is a family life. We still do plaque in the background so thank you for placement throws in their 20% 20%. So I thought would be appropriate since he's not here with us if we just reached out and and saw if we could break through to the star of this film selfie dad himself's and it turns out that his agent has cleared the way we had to go through like four levels of red and today Michael Junior referred so we should say Michael, you had an opportunity to work together with Dave and Ann Wilson in Detroit about 45 months ago.

Tell about them all really mirrored mirrored is pretty sweet. Like all anywhere about murder would nominal all it was a dream come true for a united combined humor and comedy with working on your marriage. In fact, Michael came up with the title of the funny how marriage works on a date night so I hope we do it all over the country is just a really great night's dream come true make you feel better. You're about to be on screens in living rooms tens of thousands of living rooms this weekend and homes all across the country will work was out.

This was maybe more than a year ago that was out for a couple nights called more than funny right. The article preacher there would be right there that the plans we say that depends, which is great record you really really in almost every scene in this one and this is new for you to be acting in a feature-length film like this.

This will using a lot of great great job story mind on that you were able to create some critical moment on the word wanted a boy in one spot. You think people really going to enjoy your story and then it happened so open and willing to one user account to this project was the overall message of this movie and I know this is been a passion of yours as you speak into comedy is to see couples and and dads and families oriented around God's word and and basing what they do on God's word and all about. Not really about. But we cannot do return that bad the way that our father showed us to a mall in like him completely about what joint really really well. Should you take a few minutes to be a part of today's program goes well at the convention center and have a good night. Great job on Bob.

One of the things I love about Michael is my people knows him or knows comedy and that's all you sorta get to see sometimes. And yet when you're around and there's a heart for God that is so pure, and a passion for the gospel. Getting to people I meet his real dream is to use comedy to share the gospel and everywhere he goes. People come to Christ and I just love that about. It's bigger than comedy comedy is just this tool and that's so great that he's a part of this movie because as I watched the movie I could see, here's the message and it's straight from your heart Brett, I'm sure. And for Michael's so let's explain why I'm here.

The word of thanks for having a great movie and I hear you guys just to discuss what God is doing in this thing together. Later in the development of this movie just took a couple months ago as you were finishing up bread yeah you had something pop into the project that you weren't expecting.

I think it's a very good way to put it even understated. Perhaps so we finish this project and we shot some scenes at our church complex Rita Bible Church in northern LA County and that's where Adams Pastor Adam is the pastor that dear friend of mine who we've been very close for many many years. One day, were at the church again and the actual parking lot. If you remember, you would think think selfie dad where he puts the Bible in the trunk and that very spot.

Couple months later someone says who brought the SUV Lamborghini and the buzz starts going around the church. Someone looks out and says Kanye West is here and we cannot went up to the wind like a cry room right for little babies.

Write what you said is that the friend who brought America to come up away from the crowd right but Connie was there so were we can start talking register months are little interested in 50 people and he comes back the second week, second week comes back again and course. By this point most of our audience has heard about what's been going on in Kanye's life for the last year. Since he first showed up at the church. But Avenue had no idea you were to have an unusual visitor show up that particular Sunday, not at all, just a regular Sunday you're there, ready to preach the word and I minister to the people in the flock, for God's place before you, and after the sermon was over, so I came up to me and said, guess who was here today and I'm like no I Kanye West and my first response was that seriously, seriously, never heard it. I knew I had heard a little bit about it but I had forgotten what his name was exactly like what you notice it, but I do. I love the fact that you're just not of a huge fan boy for Kanye West that your pastor, you know, you've heard he's around but it's not like you know it was more like we had been talking a bit about him and praying for him. There was a guy at our church who told us about how he worked for him and how he had been having conversations about God and he doubt they will not be willing to meet with him and I said absolutely and months have passed and I kind of forgot about it. We live in Los Angeles are celebrities that come and go, and I just didn't really think that much about it. So I said he was here Mike who I Kanye West lesson. Who is that it just took me a minute to be like oh you mean the guy we been talking about and plan for the one that our small groups. You should invite them to church like you showed up and I never saw it. Now just preaching.

He came a little bit late left little bit early and it was just amazing. There's a really praise God that's so cool that he came and we thought that would just be the end of it and he came back he initiated a conversation with you. Well, he came back a second time. At that point I didn't see him again. People told me he was there second time and at that point in my heart I knew that God was at work like upset a few times. Nope, nobody comes to our church twice unless they want to hear the Bible preached like you showed up again was evidence that God was really working in his heart and then on the third time he waited to get back at the church when I finish preaching like many pastors try to greet as many people as you can so I'm waiting back there any just came up and introduced himself. He said my name is Connie Rask. I talked to for a moment said absolutely and that we stop right there in the park a lot. He doubt was found in one of the plot of the movie was found and had a wonderful conversation. Just hearing about what God was doing in his heart and his life since that time you been meeting with him somewhat regularly doing Bible study with him right now. We started a Bible study up about a month or two later and would meet every other week and it will have the opportunity just to teach the Bible answer questions and really reach out with the gospel to whoever comes to this Bible study. He's spiritually hungry. There's no doubt he wants to learn God's word. He wants to know what does the Bible say and when you can show it to him from the Bible. He's all that just talking is I can show me in the Bible where it says that you're discipling him. I would say that there's a lot of people who were pouring into him, but I have the privilege of probably just opening up the word with him helping him understand it answer questions that he has interest to pray together with him.

The guy would help him be the man that God called him to be Adam. You know that there's a lot of crosstalk on the Internet about what should we think about this and he went and spoke with this guy, or do we believe this or I don't think it's really all about. So you're in the middle of all this, what your coaching to us. You know, I think we should just treat each person with respect to him with utmost honor. I believe that from what I see in Kanye's life and what I've heard him profess with his own mouth. There's no doubt in my mind that he loves the Lord Jesus Christ, that he wants to honor God with all of his gifts. All of his talents. He said it has said that many times and what I've seen in private is no different than what we're hearing in public. He loves the thought that God has redeemed him and he's quick to say I been delivered and I want to use my life to glorify God and it's just been amazing to see the journey to God's taking him on as he uses his resources. His time is talents whether it be music, whether it be designing something, whether it be building something he wants to pour everything into it being a God glorifying experience that would point to the fact that God is real and that God sakes people and that as a redeemed person everything you do is an expression of worship to our Lord and Savior, and he has said it's cool with him. If you use one of his new songs insulting down is pretty spectacular when he watched the trailer for selfie dad and his enemies. If you could fill in what happened there was pretty spectacular just basically said it Kanye there some guys at our church that are filming a movie. It's all about this dad being reawakened in his love for Christ and his walk for Christ and I even told him a lot of this is what's going on in your life, your dad's, walked away you come back to the Lord, your loving your wife, your wanting to put your kids to Christ.

This movie is talking about that and these guys want to know if they could use one of your songs out of Jesus his cane on the movie and after he watched the trailer he just said yes absolutely. So the first movie it from Hollywood to have a Kanye West gospel song in the selfie data that appears to be the case for a we planned all along. I have a feeling it might not be the last you know who knows what who cares for right now it is like so great and I would just say this, Adam.

You know, as I watched you mentor Kanye in one day in Detroit got to literally be with you.

What a beautiful thing that God is brought you into his life because you know is I mentored pro athletes. It was interesting you're seeing the same thing. What happens out there in the public world and the media world is often nothing close to what's really happening, and thereby has an opinion and yet no one is a man of God who's a man of the word mentoring Kanye it's beautiful that gets put in his life and now it's beautiful that he's paired you together in this movie and it's going to have an impact on the world. It's pretty expensive against Saddam tell listers about how you and Dave got connected in Detroit. Well, my wife actually grew up in Detroit and she had been there a long time and we were able to go back there to visit recently and we decided hey we got a go visit Kensington church. We got a go here Dave.

It may be and will be there too and so we got up early, went to the service and I displayable to connect with Dave after the service just for a few moments to talk and get the mediums I preach that day I was that my son Trish right coming up. We were actually bombed man, but Cody did a great job and we really enjoyed being a man. I didn't think that much about it other than it was an honor to meet you and we connected on with the conversation after the service and the reason you knew me was found today.

We had heard.

Your testimony would hurt you guys is guest on the show we heard all about you. You flipping across the stage and trying to catch her children a lot about you guys like this couple is the real bill.

So when Kanye did a Sunday service in Detroit you called Dave and said can we connect.

I was actually just scared out of my wits was like what you come preach at this event and Detroit time right in the very first time I said I don't know if you want me to do that is likely why not and I might well, if I preach him and to preach the gospel and I will be a little bit of a different flavor than what Sunday services had up to this point and he's like that's exactly what I want. So next thing I know I'm on a plane heading to Detroit the day before I left on my coming to call the one man that I know in Detroit that I would love to come help me just experience says maybe give me some wisdom of how I could approach the situation to be faithful in this opportunity and so I called Dave out of the blue and he was kind enough to return my call. This is this all pretty amazing this kind of Harmonic convergence that's happened here between the movie between the church between you guys and Michael Junior I hope our listeners will have a movie night this weekend.
