When a person makes a vow in the New Testament says you know it's it's an indication of faith is not where supposed in the Old Testament is a little different but really to me too much.
I try not to make the house. Lord, if you will do this because I have in the past and it's been a rough ride and God is always been faithful with what was it scary so I rather just will live with what I have. This is cross reference radio with our pastor and teacher. Rick asked Rick is the pastor of Calvary Chapel Mechanicsville. Rick is currently teaching through the book of Judges. Please stay with us after today's message to hear more information about cross reference radio, specifically how you can get a free copy of this teaching today.
Pastor Rick will continue his message called unwanted but need in Judges chapter 11 saying, please let me pass through your land. What the king of Edom would not heed and in like manner, they said to the king of Moab, but he would not consent so is remaining catered so the Jews on the Moses are trying to get across the desert into the to the Jordans of the cross over Edom and Moab said you can't come through and if you do go to war against you and and safe ethicist telling the story.
Verse 18 and they went along through the wilderness and bypass the land of Edom in the land of Moab came to the east side of the land of Moab and encamped on the side of Arnon, but they did not enter the border of Moab for Arnon was on the border of Moab.
Now you may say that's just a lot of heavy duty reading and you are right. Verse 19 and then Israel sent messages to Saha now and now it is getting to you know where they got the land that Israel sent messages. Açai hunting of the animal rights not Almon with two ends in our language, but a.m. on the Amorites who were different people. We discussed at the last session, king of has gone.
That's a nice name for a husband as incentive.
You know, king of the castle wise. You can call him King of #right I just I was cute anyway. Coming back to this and Israel said to him, please let us pass through your land into our place numbers 20% hundred not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So Psion gathered all his people together encamped in jazz and fought against Israel, and that is where Psion loses and Israel takes this land and you remember the 2 1/2 tribes of Israel said to Moses, we, like this land we don't want to cross over the Jordan we want to stay here and it was granted to them under the condition that they warred with their brethren in the promised land. So he setting the record straight. Now the Almon Knight king at this time listening to Japheth's defense. He doesn't really care going to go towards his mind is made up.
What about where getting that that that the title character, Japheth. This is not this just gangster out there robbing people of EEGs, smart cookie. Verse 21 and Yahweh God of Israel delivered Psion and all this people into the hand of Israel and they defeated them. Thus, Israel gain possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country. Verse 22.
They took possession of all the territory of the Amorites from the Arnon to job arc and from the wilderness to Jordan what I get out of this is is in reading the names of these rivers is that there are some harder names coming up for me to read. So this is the history of captured territory in war verse 23 and now Yahweh God of Israel is dispossess the Amorites from before his people, should you then possess it.
God deliver the land into our handsome Amorites, but here you come and you want to take it from us. It's not right and in you know this is going to bust him a little more. Verse 24. Would you not possess whatever can mosh your God gives you, to possess.
So, whatever Yahweh our God takes possession of before us, we will possess. Love it I love you, says live with a says listen to your God gave you a victory you below God gave this to me and you not to give it up well.Davis Yahweh gave this to us. You have no problem in the role reversal. You have no problem if the roles were reversed within now can mosh was the God of Moab. Now that's kind of important to the story, possibly the ammonites. Small act was their champion. God saw Jeff the E indicates the wrong deity assigns a wrong deity to them and I so he's either you know, kind of in carelessness. I don't care where he cut his car intensively is insulting and I like that one more so. Verse 25 and now. Are you any better than dialects, the son of zip or king of Moab. Did he ever strive against Israel. Did he ever fight against them.
Well, sees a mess again a masterful statement. He says you know Ballack is legendary around years ago most people still talking about how he never fought with the Jews with swords. He sent the women and that's we've covered that quite a bit and throughout Old Testament studies and but Japheth brings it up to say Ballack was smart enough to keep away it's it's veiled in what you should do the same thing.
Verse 26 but Israel dwelt in has bond and is villages are or is one 11 heart is not easy to pronounce our just not geared for that and is villages and in all the cities along the banks of Arnon for 300 years.
Why did you not recover them within that time is another heresies sorry grounds for war has expired, you missed it by 300 years all is like what a doofus he thinks of them just like okay what here. This will just take out pots and pans and leave everything for you.
Verse 27. Therefore, I have not sinned against you, but you wronged me by fighting against me. May Yahweh, the judge rendered judgment this day between the children of Israel and the people of Ambon so he's got God gets you because you're wrong and I'm right and is very important to be right and we all know that because who here tries to be wrong unless you trying to make trouble and so you he says you've had centuries you missed it.
Verse 28. However, the king of the people of Ambon did not heed the words of Jeff the witch after sent him well. It's wore more means broken hearts Jeff to try to avoid this, this aggression could not be ignored. Evil had to be resisted and that this that principle applies to us also.
Verse 29. Then the spirit of Yahweh came upon Jeff that he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Ms. book of Gilead and from Mizpah of Gilead. He advanced toward the people of Ambon were already told in earlier previous chapter that they've already come into striking distance, the ammonites and soak Jeff the he advances towards Emmett confirmation from God that God is within the species God in the spirit of the Lord is come upon him and is going to be a little like it was with Gideon and sometimes with us, you know, we just know the Lord is got this and the roller coaster starts going down and exits his quiz maybe doesn't maybe doesn't and he could have some of that so they started the war with Jeff, but he's taking the war to them and I like that he's on the attack. This aggressive tactic is probably his style why he is legendary hero as his reputation amongst his own people and that's why they said get Jeff when he hoped we need someone to fight the BL general get Jeff because he knows how to do it, but without the spirit of the Lord upon him, his aggressive style would fail. Samuel will bring up Jeff in a good light. He will mention that the Lord sent Jeff thoroughly will also mention others.
American Gideon and of course, Hebrews 11 touts him as a man of faith and were seeing why the at the same information we have.
Verse 30 now than in Jeff made a vow to Yahweh and said, if you will indeed deliver the people of Ambon into my hand. Now we pause there mid Claude Ms. Smith sentence. This shows how badly he wanted the victory. The Lord was with him and eat you.
This is what we do. You know, we pretended the stress is on us and we begin to buckle when we need to default back to the Lord is with me. He's already made that clear.
I'm going to stay with that plan and and not depart from. He's given me no reason to feel that he's departed for me this is part of the struggle and so he offers to God without authority is really you know the system rash vow God did not prohibit valves, but he did not demand them either.
You could just said nothing and when a person makes a vow in the New Testament really sort of says you know it's it's an indication you faith is not where supposed to be in the Old Testament was a little different but really to me not too much. I try not to make the house. Lord, if you will do this because I have in the past and it's been a rough ride.
God is always been faithful, but boy was it scary so I rather chase will live with what I have. You've made a vow recently tell me how works out for you mean we're rooting for you.
So long as it's wise but this is a big lesson this is a lesson in the Bible that says you want to make a vow. Pay attention to the story. Verse 31, then it would be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me then when I return in peace from the people of Ambon shall surely be Yahweh's and I will offer it up a bird offering well this sounded like a good idea at the time and most of the sitting know the story and you're waiting to find out.
Did he not, well I'm going to spoil the ending. If you're watching online, you can fast-forward and hear what I'm going to say he's thinking this is going to impress God. He's thinking that you know this is a deep vow whatever comes out Lord to be my prize bullock and whatever comes out that that's of Jeff. This thinking is a silly move in ruins a story is a little irritating. It's a lot irritating because it infuses exposition with debate and uncertainty and frustration and unnecessarily so did the historian purposely leave it this way. I think they did.
There is an alternate ambiguity that belongs to the story as far as the translators go you can render it this way, moving it from an alternate Hebrew understanding to it.
English understanding whatever met him when he return home would be dedicated to the Lord. If a person or I will offer it up as a burnt offering. If an animal the people who tell us this, you you you know you can't just dismiss them, but you do then say, then why did you translators halfway instead of leaving it like this, but you know translation to be very difficult, as there are idioms or just just tenses and this also to things involved so were going to go with how they have translated it would take it as it is nothing.
This that that's not intimidating knowing not intimidating. Not anymore. Verse 32. Suggest the advanced toward the people of Ambon to fight against them.
And the Lord delivered them into his hand so he wins the battle were not told heed on the attack years were not told about the slaughter, but he wipes them out.
Verse 11 and he defeated them from borrower, as far as men men myth 20 cities and to our Bell premium with a very great slaughter. Thus, the people of Ambon were subdued before the children of Israel. Verse 34 when Jeff Flick came to his health's at Mizpah. There was his daughter coming out to meet him with temples and dancing and she was his only child, besides her. He had neither son nor daughter and it came to pass, when he saw her that he tore his clothes and said alas my daughter you have brought me very low. You are among those who trouble me, for I have given my word to Yahweh, and I cannot go back on it, opening words of strength right, I've given my word to Yahweh, and I cannot go back on most brainless words in this situation there even cruel. Even if no matter how you interpret the story.
He really has no right subject anybody to this, but that's not how the historian is left for us to look into it. This is not noble religion. This is blind religion that we dealing with and I'm pausing to say that because there are still people that have a narrow, narrow mind, not the narrow way of Christ for the narrow mind when it comes to approaching life in Scripture and Christianity as weather proverb says it is a snare for a man to to devote rashly something as holy and afterward to reconsider his valves so these promises made to God.
God tells us.
I want you to think it through. I don't want you just rushing to get this emotional surgeon you that you feel like your passions justify whatever comes out of your mouth. Garson is not the case and will hold you accountable to that if this were a matter of him dedicating his daughter to be a burnt offering.
Well, the law of the Jew had. There were legal options that they were nested they were mandated were an option really to redeem the person you could murder somebody and then present him as an offering and call it a sacrifice that was prohibited so you have. We have to lose the case with or preclude with the rule out that he killed his daughter and then authors of this is a heart even say it, it will have study him in a while and think like so never is a pledge to do evil, binding, for God's people. David made a pledge you know what and if if I don't get my hands on every male enables house and kill them all. May God do to me. Well you know Abigail just diffuse that whole thing. He never even got to the inner fence and and that was the end of that vow. And David did not of course was not judged by God. You made a vow recklessly so you you have to just understand what God is trying to say to us. He sang tone it down. I know you get a passionate beach trouble, no one is bound to an oath of evil. If this if someone tries to get you to rob a bank and use okay I'll do what I promise you that is a you know what I change my mind. You're free and I'm sorry I gave a vow I got to rob the bank so I hope that helps us understand as we peel the layers off of this. I never believed that he offered his daughter. That way, but I do believe he created a big problem for her, and himself and well as verse 36.
So she said to him, my father, if you have given your word to the Lord due to me according to what has gone out for your mouth because Yahweh has avenged you of your enemies, the people of Ambon. What we get out of this is that they have a great relationship is a good father.
She damn whatever you know I'm with you this Sunday. Maiden is a remarkable person remarkable woman that too much is a person that remarkable. She seeks to help her father for Phyllis Bullis's drum word verse 37 then she said were father let this thing be done for me.
Let me alone for two months, that I may go and wonder on the mountains and be well. My virginity, my friends and I tell historian if you were to say to him. Why didn't you tell us if he did or not. I think the story was crazy because he didn't do it when children do that in your CD knows the Scripture he would've known as other sections would need to know about LAN right to something in war asked me that I think of as I would be given than I would've written up as well. We got to the point right away that I don't like suspense.
We are anniversaries and she let me be, will my virginity. What if she were about to be slaughtered on made a burnt offering if they should be be well here virginity I did to be a lot of things I think should be upset about some other things as they are going to make love to someone and have kids bomber. I think it's going to kill me was not going to go to my girlfriends and for two months in the mountains and them going to keep going and not come back.
That's what I think she would've said so this more celibacy and childlessness is the curse that she is got to endure because of her foolish dads vow who was otherwise great man, but this just messed it all up so these were the key that she's be wailing her virginity this keyword to understanding what's going on and it's emphasized echoed in verse 38. She is memorialized for obeying her father and in this society for a woman to voluntarily be childless was full for the Lord in anything related him was monumental is paramount to a man going to war in getting valor for the Lord's you in that sense was offering her life as a sacrifice and there is no knowledge and further Scripture is a rainy point to this that in would've been somebody will call this out later on this shameful thing in Israel. Now there is brutality in the book of Judges will come to that, but that's not the same thing and is not done by the hand of a man of God who is in the book of Hebrews is a man of faith, a man who was filled with the spirit of God was raised up by God and so were not going to charge them.
However, there are those who are inflexible their inconsiderate Bible proves if you would, they will purchase yeah what he said burnt offering test of the Bible says will be aware that because Jesus said, beware the leaven of the of the Pharisees and when the disciples took it literally.
He got on a case about that and you so dumb I just teach you this is straighten them out this you gotta use your brains when you come the Scripture not talking about Brad. That's what you thinking to them. Mark chapter 9 is is where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched. If you take that literally than the fire can't burn the worm that is not fire cellular problem.
Here he goes to think it through some of you know this is a worm in any screech of ignoring you the rest of eternity in Europe earn at the same time. While that's not what it means. And so just be careful with the I would recommend you not do that. Other scholars that say no. He did it. Yeah there are the strength of their is just on that one statement they have nothing else to to support that statement and they don't do that. Another script areas of Scripture as my observation is so again I am right first 38 so he said go and telling her daughter his daughter go and he sent her away for two months and she went with her friends and derailed her virginity on the mountains that she's not going to have children and and this again was a big deal and it would've been almost foolish. If you know well I gotta get back up to two months. I gotta get back to going to cut my throat got me and put me on the altar, cook me only partially. I'm not going to this in my head. Am I just looking at this from 21st century view of what is barbaric and what is not. Or am I putting myself there at the time of the put myself at the time I got there I got the law and it would've been murder, not a sacrifice and would been a very said in the end of the village people were roses who can really do this you go over the Mulliken King and Kim Sinead would do things like that but we don't we don't do this. In fact, we won't hear about human sacrifices until we get to Ahaz and Manasseh in Israel. That is, we hear about some of the others doing well. Verse 39 and it was so at the end of two months that she returned to her father and carried out his vow with her, which he had vowed she knew no man and it became a custom in Israel see again it's emphasized she didn't know a man and became accustomed well killing girls and become accustomed. She was honored as just a champion of of her word and submission and just a lot of things with it was a big mistake on Jennifer's part and we don't know what else happened. Verse 40 that the daughters of Israel went four days each year to lament the daughter of Japheth.
The Gilliard die and that is her condition. So I I don't think there's much house to say about any of this. Certainly, he would've known the story of Abraham and Isaac and knew that God is not into that and would not of cross that that line and so that's it is Allah gotta say about that tonight.
It was easier than when I was anticipating I was really planning to really going to long rabbit trails again. Jeff the is applauded as a hero of the faith, and I think you were forfeited that had carried on how as we would think it reads think that he exercised this option out of killing his daughter just to satisfy the moon.
