1. The two of you have been writing hymns and songs for worship for many years now. In fact, we sing many of those hymns in the congregation that I pastor each Sunday. n light of all of that, what inspired you to write an album of hymns and lullabies for children?

2. Are we supposed to lift our hands up as we sing praises or is that a preference?

3. Is worship exclusively about music? I know that the bible says that we should glorify God with all of our lives. Is there a difference between worshipping on Sunday and worshipping God throughout the week in our daily lives?

4.  Many parents struggle with sharing resources with their kids that help build up their faith. Some resources, on the one hand, can feel cheesy, and on the other, might feel too uptight. I know you and Keith have children, how have you both cultivated an appreciation of worship in their lives?

5. Does worship music in church foster appreciation for diverse cultures, and should a church incorporate different worship music styles to attract diversity in members?

Christian musicians and worship leaders Keith and Kristin Gaddy, Keith and Kristin welcome the core Christianity Thanksgiving. Many of our listeners may not realize how many of your songs they sing in church every Sunday, but we thought we played just a bit of one of them piece she gained this. Now that's the song that kind of put you two on the map and I know you're from Northern Ireland. You moved to Nashville but right now you're back in Northern Ireland correct that we cannot cash a single ball in mid-September quarantined lakes that foreground inherent 9 to 17 months, and loving to be home for the time right up in the North Coast beaches so it's just it's been a real special went to Elaine Bennett about song adjust her 20 years ago this month as well. We just finished seven or four kids are trying but M's has been a real beautiful season for us. Yeah I just have to say on behalf of my congregation. Thank you because we sing so many of those songs in our own worship service been a huge blessing for us to know that you have recently that a new project I wanted to ask you about this album of hymns and lullabies for children.

What was the inspiration behind Sierra Kim's man's head Chrissy are turning 40 next year.

Is there something that you would like today that might be a little different, but not to different from what we've been doing why writing hymns for the last 20 years. In the last two years and being parents towers as we thought of what what is singing for each of us also mean something very significant for our children and passing on the family had been teaching them songs and singing with them, particularly in the evening time that I became more familiar with this idea of evensong which is an additional Anglican practice actually is a short service at the end of the day, and let's find a surly iron leads as to the Lord's three song three prayer through liturgies to Scripture readings is just a way to help sanctify the night and I love that IDM what it meant fire for Keith and I did also find shelter in that sense of God's comfort and bring you a lot of time at the end of the day and so this album is a collection of old hymns the hands of our hands and lullabies freshly written in the last couple of years, and symbols are much additional ones, and it was a challenge to China recorded during luck sign and we have received plan fret before we ever thought of COBIT. 19. But we were able to figure out night with Jay Sarah recording at home in Nashville and actually is a project for the home environments key might of the home and that was gazing today during luck that I think it's a beautiful album with that. We would play a little sample from that up for you right now the beautiful night you can see the video for the song but it was filmed in Franklin Tennessee that Amy Grant's ranch. You can describe the setting because it's just so spectacular beautiful old barn in the middle of the Tennessean countryside and recorded that my brother actually helped direct that directs that session. I recorded all the songs it was it was very limited time window because he wanted to get light just as the sun was setting and so very crazy few hours that he really did capture the softness of the transition of the night. We had beautiful fairy lights arrived in a small ponds immediately sign all the songs life, but the kids and for a couple of the songs is about was a beautiful setting that we oftentimes get questions on the program about a Christian you mention handing the face down and think of song being one of the one of the great tools to be able to do that as you guys come together as a family at the end of the day and you're seeking to draw near to the Lord together with some of the challenges you face and a lot of parents have a hard time with that. You just sitting down with three kids, four kids and it can kinda get crazy how you dealt with that is definitely not a perfect thing. On some nights are better than others in the hope is that that the general impression will be that we take as many options. He says we can dictate to the songs they sang because when we sing something we remember at a much deeper and more significant way.

And so you want to harness the opportunity. It is one of the things that we want our kids to remember.

Let's sing those things and stuff years ago we started dating him in months and it is a bad know where we musicians and singers and want to put anybody off. And that's I think we are all called to saying it's not just for those he are very good at R&D like It is something that we all day. As believers we want to pass on as well. The whole idea of singing what it is. Here kids and so we just over the course of the monthly commonality with Emily sing at me sometimes and just evening plan over our phones just become familiar with cancer so responsive you are not directly teaching them if it's just in the background as well. It's amazing how much they can and pick up bonnets over the last few years our kids have learned lots of different hymns and songs and the little ones are obviously just getting used to the malady in a few of the words, but that's the great thing about hymns and even Christmas carols this month where it empties and them once in Royal David's city. These are songs that we tend to carry with S3 life and carols are wonderful example. Every year we come back to them and they are so much a part of our culture and part of the Christmas season so they can get a little bit of a wonderful song and then next year get little bit more of that little that more only adds to their understanding is a real worthwhile investment. Well, you mentioned that your girls actually sing on some of the songs on the open day. There's a song called Jesus friend of little children, which is a sonic Keith grab singing with his mom which we added Jesus left me this I know is he which is of course one of the most well-known children's hands. All of the world and that also lately. They joined us on Angie Peterson and band chives beautiful song. Is he worthy and go part and much of the grits on the teacher. Kids actually is an idea there. If you're a parent we want to recommend this to you. It's called evensong hymns and lullabies at the close of day. We actually have some copies of the CD would love to give you one of those for donation of any amount to core Christianity. You can find out more about that by going to court, Christianity.com/offers a Christian we have a few questions that come in from some of our listeners and they're all dealing with worship. Here's one that the barber emailed us she said are we supposed to lift our hands up, as we sing praises or is that a preference thank you Kathy know if you want to encourage the underdog never saw actually wrong not know, and sometimes punch the enthusiasm after we were growing up with a mix of people that were used to say: charismatics razor hands and all the conservatives doing the same thing. So the Lord looks at our heart the Lord commanded more times if you include exclaim and extol and proclaim praise and all derivative works for saying was: come on Scripture is something which is emphatic and just think we should lift around whatever way we want a good thing to do things a natural thing to be honest, I think the primary focus is to be singing and then of course I also say that if your hand and said bye to hit somebody face that something detrimental to the congregation. I think some as we do feel a sense of being in her own mental moment sometimes, but I think whenever we are gathered. One of the unique parts of that is that we are congregation got together and so where there to be the body. It is a different thing to just singing in our car and so I think to be finding ways in which we can sing well together and connect well together think that's to be the focus is something I love singing Psalms. But there is definitely a disconnect when using your singing a song that is full of language of joy and delight bridges and the people look like somebody has stolen the doorknob and it's kind of a single human expression is what I think singing is the core thing in our hearts is so interesting throughout Scripture. How you do have the sort of postures that are associated with worship, bowing and raising the him but I do appreciate what you said there about the heart and singing in a Jesus that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. And even in the prophets. At times God rebuked Israel for offering their hands but not their hearts in worship. So I think you can be a both and I think you're right on Christian you don't want to know excellently poke someone in the eye as your worshiping the Lord so be careful with her?

The came in from one of our listeners named Caleb regarding worship wondering exclusively about my walk all over all of our lives. For some people, so that means that every action and every thing we do with our lives is that worship is there a difference between how we worship on Sunday church posts throughout the week in our daily lives, worshipers overload the simplest text is Romans 12 one. First 11 chapters of Romans are perhaps the finest description of the wonder of our salvation of redemption story turns in the last two chapters and is therefore in view of God's mercy. Offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship.

So it is all of our lives for our command of the sing as well as not is not without singing as part of that did singing in turn itself does actually affect every part of her mind, our emotions or thoughts or feelings are memory bank.

Our prayers are words or relationships or family our church and our community, and witnesses will little you put it there. I think about you know, Paul's words were he talks about singing to each other even could you talk a little bit about that you how how it's not just singing to the Lord, expressing ourselves to the Lord help even the content of our songs is as were singing in the context of the congregation encouraging for the body of Christ. Absolutely no work know what we sing on a Sunday because of who God is primarily we sing. Secondly, because we are commanded, because we are created Sunday because the gospel itself compels us to sing about his God is not his office, but even beyond that we sing for each other. In the words of Sunday morning. If I just had the worst possible Sunday morning on my children are scoring a D grade in their behavior that morning on my mind is concerned with other things. I still am singing the guy in front of me. I'm still singing for the guy behind me. It's just part of the more holistic picture of being church. Christianity is not simply getting the philosophy and theology right it's actually being part of the body and on how we do that is as historically we fill our homes about the origins of the Psalms and as reporting Psalms together. It was very much believed that this would be for every family to use him for every church to use. So I think those of us who lead a family of those was for me to church responsibly to make sure you know that in his congregational members.

We we owe it to each other.

We sing for each other is a wonderful point is that it comes to educating Arkansas to what singing is in a culture which analyzes the performance and idolizes the silhouettes to understand singing is for all of us and for kids at a young age to see that very much is part of what it means to be a believer in the same way we teach our kids to pray tickets to read the Scriptures. I think we have a responsibility to teach them to sing and understand their voice in the context of the wider congregation and so we are creating and growing appetite for singing in our homes for the face that it is only gathering a Sunday and indeed we are encouraging the next generation to sing. We are growing the voice of the charts and what an incredible witness that is to our children to see other family saying and for those outside of the text to commit and see and date families all different types of people from different backgrounds gathered together singing the same malady Sam lyric what a fine picture that is of the unity of the body to see that.

I love this vision that you guys are talking about singing in the home, and I wonder what would your encouragement be to people whose who maybe they're just intimidated me.

I think about it, even in the context of the local church and really wanting to cultivate congregational singing people lifting up their voices but I think one of the one of the fears that many people have an and you mentioned it earlier Christian is. I just don't really know how to sing or I don't like the idea of hearing my voice and other people hearing my voice so how do you encourage that person who feels like they're not that good at singing to sing in the home and and then sing in the church as well.

Find the very best songs that you can.

The best arrangements of the size that you can attach into your family and then fill the spaces where life happens songs of the Lord and that's in the kitchen are in the car or as they go to sleep at night are all the different spaces. There is years singing as she make fate in the evenings that will begin to bring it and make it part of the fabric of life. Instead of normalizing it and then I would also then find time to be intentional for assets. The evening we attended the I family locate the family devotional thought in the morning when the kids are most alert and we finally started a Bible's ratings amazingly and lap siding at the children associate the shares with us being angry so we did we say that in the morning because singing is a lot more attractive and easier to hack on CN some night this plant in the background is that going to sleep another nights else I come on in 20 minutes earlier, I want you to listen to that what you think about it. Let's try singing together lyric. I got no chalkboard and write the first verse to me this works.

I'm never innocent in a pressurized way enough. It takes a couple months to learn to him or just a couple weeks. That's fine. This is the least thing that we have done for the last few years. I think the important thing is is curating some set of the song. Last we did these Getty kids ML's a few years ago just kids singing because I want to hear my kids just here are even for me to listen to my voice thing over and over again without having kids sing them will be and will be a helpful thing that I think having a core list is really important that you know songs that are neutral.

Our kids are listening to lots of different things all the time.

My kids can sing many songs from Disney and other shows that they watch their little sponges and it's amazing to me and those lyrics are going into the hearts and minds all the time not to be against that and we loves the Disney songs, but I think because that such fairytale grind for them. Learning these things find the best time she can Hemsworth knowing and holding on stage and if you are not curating songs for your kids somebody else in the Psalms. More seriously the most enjoyable. The Western world today because they understand that if you go to good strong bus with nine figures in dollars during they understand the storm you can build a movie and abroad around world's most Christians are absolutely laissez-faire for kids were singing this shift the conversation from me second singing being just a specialist activity for those he had training in our really good at it. It's not like learning the violin singing should be part of the disciplines and the joy of every believer and I think like everything when you want to encourage your kids and something it needs to be important to you, and I think he's saying it doesn't matter how great your voice is singing along playing music. It's important. So I think part of the role of the parents is understanding what it is and making it part of your life, your listing the core Christianity. Our special guests are Keith and Kristin Getty.

Their new album is called evensong hymns of lullabies at the close of day. Just a wonderful album for parents for families again were offering that for a gift of any amount to core Christianity. You can find out more by going to core Christianity.com/offers.

Here's a question that came in from one of our listeners named Jordan and Jordan says does worship music in church foster appreciation for diverse cultures and should a church incorporate different worship music styles to attract diversity and its members wonderful question struggle to give specific advice. All of them to know a congregation. We love the Lord with all our heart monitor strength to love our neighbor as ourselves. Nuts are two commands in life, so worship is primarily about singing to God, but we then have to find the family sing rest so you know Kristin likes a lot of very sophisticated singer songwriters are hoping to like a lot of rice with good orchestral music together as a family we don't listen to the Stauffer listen to stuff our girls so we can all sing together. So when you expound out of the church family. This is not actually a boy, this is not necessarily about showcasing the greatest church music in history, nor is it about showcasing the most popular music on the radio stations right but it is what helping the whole family sing together so well you draw from Irish melodies or spirituals or are the best of American hymnody or are you took some of the greatest hymns from Europe that were written in Spanish or French or German entrance from transcript of diverse English hymns and translate them into Spanish is for your congregation to work for yourselves, but I think firstly we have to make sure we build a Psalms make it very clear that what we sing.

Ultimately, the doxology ultimately becomes our theology so in your church is the responsibility of the leader. What we sing in our home what music is my home was responsibility of me as a leader. My whole that's the first week we need to make sure that we're building up rich believers love the word of Christ dwell in us richly. The second thing is candidly good songs are good songs. The Bible is very clear that good art is very useful about art is very bad does not glorify God in any way whatsoever. So let's not read about the Bush. Let's not be prophetic and unintelligent good songs, amazing greatest things well anywhere goes in the world is interesting in my African-American friends and my Celtic friends. We all argue, but I smelled it was with them was ours and we all will go through an internal fighting mode, but the point is, grip melodies, you won't grip songs after the quality let's say okay let's actually see one of the songs. Whether it's generational, whether it's cultural or residential use songs on else will become the end of the day, your church inherited a world-class organ of missing hymns will know please don't insult the people doing songs that don't work in the organ tournament. Similarly, the congregation hold dear in their worship but but will have to work at themselves, but big picture of the God of the Bible high-quality songs on the report really feeds our whole family over sleep. There are some great songs would just feed everybody but foster the what else to me to help build our family worship is a sign that has a really interesting to 70 years to say hi. Folk music can be so easily translated into multiple styles. It's amazing how some of these basic functionalities can be arranged in so many different ways and we have enjoyed things for example some of our hands being Nice and oriented and loves a different way that's is been exciting looking too nerdy with the skills interesting to us because of amazing Grace.

Jesus loves me Christ alone actually on most of the grid spirituals are all oral, Potomac, and so that they do those because that's really essentially that's the best normal access to matters that his music is most ritzy. Ultimately, it was most roots reform those actually translate across cultures across generations across languages, across arrangements to get it. I just feel so fitting that were talking about this because we try to do on this program every day. Keith and Kristin is help people understand and grow in the core doctrines of the Christian faith.

But I think that oftentimes as Christians we forget that music is songs hymns is one of the primary ways historically that the churches communicated the faith they wasn't just through preaching and lectures. It was as as we been saying you know through the songs of the church and so I just think it's absolutely beautiful what it is that you guys are doing because it's not just encouraging such is done well, but it really is communicating the faith of the gospel to people so that it goes from there head to their heart that ultimately stays there is a man I know I speak. I grew up.

On it was a frustration to me because many of my heroes.

Martin Luther guys that although they had very different theologies of music. Different villages were so many other issues of Christian life directly affected you know they both understood to bring the Bible to Europe to a modern culture to modern growing culture that was against biblical faith which which Europe at the time was in and in a way that was probably still more aggressive than it is in America, you know how to build the believers on part of that was taken control of what you think. Not unlike unlike much of the modern church that they understood the singing was courted everything so they took very seriously what was being sung in the home.

What was been some of the church. They were were all at both the songs were chosen and also in teaching the congregations and exhorting them uneven, criticizing them to sing well practice to learn to do it wholeheartedly. Keith and Kristin, thank you so much for joining us. Christianity again this album is evensong hymns and lullabies at the close of the day.
