I'm Jane Hawley and this is Sunday morning we been hearing a lot about the math of the race between President-elect Joe Biden and Pres. Donald Trump this morning will talk about that and a lot more with former president Barack Obama's interview with Gail Kang of CBS this morning is his first since the election. Let's go. We haven't heard much from him for the last four years, former president Barack Obama demand is no longer holding back carbon frustrated. It was important for me somebody who had served to simply let people know this is not normal Barack Obama on election his presidency and family life in the White House had Sunday morning and I will be in conversation with Goldie Hahn and Kurt Russell to movie a listers with a lot more than that in common. Tracy Smith does the honors I think actually enjoyed is dangerous as well.

I this year.

One of the best-known couples in history is being played by one of the best known couples in Hollywood and it seems they've been together almost as long with their first impression and forgotten it. I forgot a lot of stuff. A little magic with Goldie Hahn and Kurt Russell coming up on Sunday morning.

Alina Chow talks with Leonard Lauter, son of cosmetics Queen Este Lauder Steve Hartman has the tale of Apple. The pigs very close call plus commentary from a mask. Jim Gaffigan and more on Sunday morning 15 November 2020 will be back in a moment to begin this morning. Former president Barack Obama as we mentioned, it's his first interview since his vice president, Joe Biden became the nation's President-elect. Pres. Obama talks about that and much more with CBS this morning Gail Kang, good to see them.

The CU all roles arrest him or almost 4 years after he left the White House railroad speed, former president Barack Obama is ready to talk, let's go. He's been looking back while writing the first volume of a memoir about his presidency the feeling that I ventured out of office spectrum of democracy President of the United States take us to that day when you walked in you know Inauguration Day is a little bit about everybody else. It's a little bit like you, whether you are so busy trying to make sure you are doing everything right, but is where they're supposed that you can't catch her breath. The first time I walked in as president by myself: set up the resolute desk. I think you feel a reverence for the office and was present like a said about if you weren't religious before you got officers sure on your knees praying once you president Barack Obama inherited a country teetering on the brink of financial calamity recession if not another depression but is he trying to work with Congress to immediately encounter resistance and operate Obama were to make you a one term president Mitch McCall said that about how to deal with that type of hostility part of what I try to describe is how early that obstructionist starts on day one will try to pass the recovery are stimulus package, people will lose their jobs or lose their homes.

The economy was collapsing at the time I thought R12.

Obviously the problems are that agree with everything but on this.

All the economists agree this is what we need to give some cooperation and we did get the American recovery and reinvestment act eventually did pass with just three publican Senators voting yes but the die was cast as a president then set out to overhaul the health care system opposition to his agenda only increased address Congress in September of his first year in office. The hostility was overt. It was starting one of the big examples that many people thought of disrespect.

You're laying out the affordable care act joint session of Congress and in the middle of your speech, Congressman Joe Wilson South Carolina yells in the middle of that you live. I heard up audible gasp and I looked at you, you know, we could see the veins on your head on the side so I'm wondering what did you think in that moment.

And what did you want to do. What did you do write about this. I am asking you, and my initial inspectors. Let me walk down inspectors.

What is that, instead I just that's not true.

Just move on. Called afterwards to apologize.

Although as I poured out of the book. He saw a huge spike in campaign contributions from Republicans across the country who bought something heroic throughout his term president Obama was sometimes criticized for seeming aloof, not playing the DC political gain. Do you think you made enough of an effort to reach out to the other side of it. I'll we tried everything we had Super Bowl parties. We better go to the caucus meetings the first of being president pump fiscal constraints.

All that I could've done without actual workflow work. I loved even what it didn't love me back.

As Barack Obama tried to adjust to the presidency and the politics.

His family was trying to adjust to life in the White House bubble.

Is this where isolation that you begin to feel like that feeling no I don't think you're fully used our conversation Wednesday afternoon was at the Smithsonian's National portrait Gallery or painting of Michelle Obama hangs among the first ladies that whole thing definitely not her idea.

She made it clear she was never into politics. She always supported you and there are times when you said when we do this she goes. But wait, what we wait we like our quarters are mindful of the sacrifice. The good news is that the for whatever reason she is forgiven.

Sort of shoe store lies which is what you put up with Obama's were one of the few first families with young children who moved into the White House malleolus.

10. Sasha was only seven years old. The impact on father and daughters both ways you can remember missing team and their round cheeks and their pigtails that they didn't seem to suffer in terms of lack of time with dad. You said you were always very acutely aware I probably suffered more from not being able to do some ordinary bad things that I've done before we got to the White House come from some security briefing in the situation room reading about terrorist threats of this and have them sit down and/or talk about like that boy was so stupid takes you out of yourself in your head and remind you what's good being your first lady is greatest honor of my life and I hope president says his family left the White House for the last time in 2017.

They were able to exhale show particular when it was over two things, one was objectively.

I just have more time to she was able to let go of some of the stress just feeling as if I've got to get everything right all the time washed all the time.

Her releasing her breath hold it for close to 10 years at that point now that Obama can look back on his successes and failures keep coming to office facing high expectations both as the first black president at the age of 47. One of the youngest lot of folks in the same way that they expected that word.

A post-racial America because we elected a black president about the club people expected, but we got this young progressive president and now subway will eliminate inequality were immediately going to have universal healthcare climate change legislation immigration reform in criminal justice reform in all the things that I wanted to get done but what I understood very early on is the federal government headed by the president is ocean liner is not a speedboat.

10 years from now, 20 years from now what you've done, may be appreciated as having been good and helpful, but at the time, it can feel like while this is happening fast.

President Obama's successor was Donald Trump summit seen Mr. Trump's victory in part as a backlash to the Obama presidency, Trump often raises eyebrows when he says he's done more for black America color does raise our current president since Abraham Lincoln think when you hear that you take that as an insult you. I think it's for the many things he says do not take personally or seriously. Although I think they can often be destructive. Barack Hussein Obama whether he took things Donald Trump said personally, not Barack Obama emerge front and center last month of his former VP Joe Biden's presidential campaign.

I've never lost hope over these last four years. Man didn't pull any punches been frustrated.

Michelle Obama always says when they told Owego hi seem to any people. When you were on the campaign trail for Joe Biden family was a matter of going lower height. You went in.

They called it Barack Obama unleashed was personal for you or did you just think I've had it. It wasn't personalized.

I've had it moment stating facts and it was out of character for you to speak up, Mr. Pres., that way I was not the person who White House briefing room said is bleach the way to solve covert I wasn't doing a routine. I was repeating words that I heard, it is not my preference to be out there. I think we were in a circumstance in the selection in which certain norms, certain institutional values that are so extraordinarily important, had been breached that it was important for me as somebody who had served in that office to simply let people know this is not normal. This election is over. While Joe Biden waits to assume the presidency. President Trump continues without evidence to challenge the election's outcome trying to steal election many of Mr. Trump supporters continue to stand behind 72 million people voted for Donald Trump. What does that say to you about the state of this country what it says is that we are still deeply divided the power of that alternative world is presented. The media that those voters consume carries a lot of weight. You worried about that. Yes, it's very hard for democracy to function.

If we are operating on just completely different sets of facts is clear as we sit here today have a peaceful transition. I think about John McCain calling George and Laura Bush welcoming you and Michelle Obama to the White House. I remember you inviting Donald Trump to the White House. I wish that you succeed because we want the country to succeed. He does not seem to have taken a page out of any of those playbooks will so what is at stake here.

Well look Joe Biden will be the next president states, Harris will be the next VP.

There is no legal basis is getting support from members of the Republican Party were not challenging and that is disappointing. But it's been sort of par for the course during these four years.

They obviously think there was any fraud going on saving about it for the first but there's damage to this because what happens is that peaceful transfer of power.

The notion that any of us who attain elective office whether it's dogcatcher or president or servants of the people.

It's a temporary job were not above the roles were not above the law. That's the essence of our democracy and as to advice for his old running mate. He doesn't need my advice and I will help them in a ways that I can plan into some work on the White House staff or something right position as I would not Joe Woodley should be like what you doing what he is doing these days. Running a charitable foundation designing his presidential library in Chicago and along with Michelle producing for Netflix.

Gone are the trappings of the office such as a presidential motorcade clearing his path. Instead, Barack Obama is rediscovering simple things drive along that stove and drive in the car. The car seat and suddenly stopped as a red light occurred, read, or something in the backseat. All life. This is intelligence matters with former acting Dir. of the CIA. Michael Morel bridge Colby is cofounder and principal of the Marathon initiative project focused on developing strategies to prepare the United States for an era of sustained great power competition states put on my to something we can usually figure it out what people are saying and what we can know analytically and purely as our strategic situation or situations not being matched up with follow. Intelligence matters where ever you get your podcasts take out with page again this week Stephen Landau live Mitch McConnell in one of Washington's biggest midterm monument list for me to Senate races you think Republicans have the best chance of taking a democratic seed with Nevada not Georgia. Garrett on Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts all the choices the places you could click all the videos you could serve. Why would anyone settle on a sleeping pig had to be one of the least interesting thing is she's not to show the least stressful with political tensions. Paladino wanted that Friday night was boring, animal live stream.

Unfortunately, her desire for drama free programming came to a crashing halt after the pig knocked over a heat lamp buried straw and set the barn place.

As if that wasn't enough. The only one in the world who knew what was happening, which is let me make my heart think there is nothing I can do and it was terrifying.

Laura tried calling the farm but no one answered. Even tried 911. Do she lived 80 miles away. That's why, deep down, Laura knew it was hopeless, but she kept trying different numbers anyway and would you believe they busted and she finally got a hold of the farmer just in time I start crying a lot like holding her so sorry to tell how much he loved this week Laura traveled the June Farms and West Sand Lake, New York to meet farm manager Josh fix. Thank you, Josh, and cared for that. Ethel since it was a piglet. Definitely inspiring to know that there are other people that feel as much affection and love towards examples that we do. The only one uninspired was Ethel herself appears to emerge from the ordeal completely unshaken. The farm can now proceed with its plan to breathe promising the first piglet will be made. Laura named after me, but I think it will take her lineup as a reminder that most people are heroes just waiting for their moment era. Like mother like son could be the motto of the cosmetics giant Este Lauder Alina Cho talks with a man whose life's work is all about keeping up appearances for me this is like memory Lane.

Many families keep their memories take this letter keeps his company are, everything had done this a sample to monitor is chairman and former CEO I 90 billion-dollar beauty. I tell people that I'm a lipstick salesman. I love to sell things. He's literally shaped and in turn industry that shape lipstick that I use Ukraine ever had a standard blood shape lipstick so I took a Gillette blue blade selected so that it would fit the woman started 74 years ago is iconic. I remember sitting in my highchair and in the kitchen and I would see her mixing the creams on the stove.

She sold her so-called jars of hope. Initially, beauty salons in New York.

Tempting women with free samples and three-minute I've never seen anyone love to make women like you, it became only business.

Her husband Joseph kept the books, and a young Leonard packed boxes of powder and cleansing. We have a little tiny factory and I would go there after school $0.25 an hour work lottery enlisted in the Navy after college and joined the company in 1958 sharing an office with mom and I would listen to her on the phone. I learned I learned he writes about life lessons.

In his new book company I keep equal parts biography business and tribute to his mother one expanded oversee created clinic a risky move to take on rivals. I said big, we get will have competition as to why wait for someone else to do it. I get myself it worked. Today the company owns more than 25 brands. This is your mother's off. It's very glamorous for as Estee changed that glamorous life he'd private strength like her mother and sister.

Estee was diagnosed with old-timers disease. She died at 97.

Part was that I was assigned to watch her mother who had been so vibrant start to deteriorate, like it was very hard but I remember being with her and my wife Evan came into the room. Estee we miss you in the office. She looked it up and said I miss me to.

Monitors donated millions to fighting Alzheimer's. Just wanted his many well-known causes. I really simply give money to people you do it. I want to make a flip transform something the lifelong art collector made headlines for his pledge to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

One man's gift is about to shake up the world of art is worth billion dollars. Mother's love of art helped him find love again after his first wife Emily died in 2011. He connected with photographer Judy Glickman, a longtime family friend who had recently lost her husband now important because I want to reinforce everyday. My love for her. They got married in 2015. She was 76 and he was 81. Is this real and is what is happening like a mess and I am really starting keep all might say he didn't have to get married have to share my life with someone different stage of life equally as exciting and challenging test in a very different way and very special.

In his special life letter says he's learned alternate lesson. It's not all about success. He had to boil it down and put a message in the bottle.

What is the thing that you want to be remembered for.

He listens so he was kind really sharing the silver screen and a life together for many years now they are in conversation with Tracy Smith films Chronicles to holiday movie.

I know you're not dreaming, Jack, that's Kurt Russell said his village was arguably the course that is longtime life partner Goldie Hahn but it might surprise you to know that for Goldie and Kurt. The clauses are more than merely mythical. I like your approach to these characters because you take them seriously. This is not a character or cartoon). I seriously is real human being in the comic book character is not made up. He was a bishop.

He was a man. Question is courses through the mess legend and whatnot house. How is he still around. How is that no matter how St. Nicholas a.k.a. Sandra is still around or how he and the missus wound up together. The real life story of Kurt and Goldie has well magic bullet so their first meeting college that been on the side of the 1968 Disney musical one and only genuine original family van their first impression. I don't know. I think for me is waging.

I mean I was like dating older guys in my 20s I was 15 years old license. Goldie was a dancer without much of a speaking part and what the producer like her name called me.

I know this is what you really your name sounds stripper. My mother gave me was my great great aunt's name Goldie said oh I'm not changing my name. I'm sorry my middle name is Jean Goldie Gina, but that would work for you anyway. Well I guess that's where we met.

But by the 1980 Goldie Hahn produced the hit movie starring into work, producing, directing, acting at a time when a lot of women were not doing. How many times did you hear no, not many know what the problem wasn't the problem was the trepidation really other male directors wanting to work with me because they thought that I would want to take over looking for somebody.

Kurt had shed his wholesome image Goldie again during his audition for 1984 swing shift.

Both were divorced and neither was looking for love matter fact I might go. I was at a time in my life where I was very when it came to any kind of relationship with the possibility of my worth.

You can handle that.

Maybe there's a chance some reality there putting together. I used to think of myself worst foot forward. I hardly say that I would say if you done that with me while I think it did was well the first time I met her I was horribly hung over. And that's not good for it. It's a hard thing to hold what you done that night was that was something that you set apart, you can't stay with you can't you in the four decades since they met Russell and Hahn have created some extraordinary characters by their own. Two very separate careers under one roof. One of themselves is not what he says do you guide each other as far as the roles that you've chosen are there ones not at all do you talk about it before you say yes or no. He's never made a mistake in terms of what is decided to do whatever is and even movies that I didn't do a lot of respect I know, but I just think you stand only three ages for women in Hollywood district attorney and driving Miss Daisy, of course, Goldie hasn't made all that many career missteps either, and when they're not working.

They divide their time between homes in Aspen and this one in Los Angeles here for years we built it and it's just so great, but they say they're proud of their blended family for children between them with six grandchildren and it seems enough love to go around so I'm sure you guys get asked this secret. If you could boil it down if asked that question because it's a question but there's two things for me anyway and you both want to be together and I don't want to be together and as long as you because it's your right it's up and down and sideways is whatever the end of the day what how do you explain I don't know I guess it's as simple as saying I for me is the same thing is what you're saying.

I call that love but you can actually survive a relationship in a way that when you get older you go so glad I got to whatever. That was tonight. I mean, because think relationships go through. Sometimes really hard times but there's nothing sweeter than having a family that is just about everybody. It seems has something to say about masks, including of course our Jim Gaffigan talking about masks you were a mask at this point, we all know why were learning these things if you leave your house right now encounter someone will likely look like me.

I'm not as good-looking as me when I see someone with the master they look perfectly normal. They look like a mass pro my personal experience with mass has not been so smooth. My first obstacle is that will most adult master too small for my head. You see I have a big head, both physically and metaphorically. You could actually store another head inside of my like if anyone's missing letterhead.

It might be in here.

I know I have a large head since middle school. When my football coach announced to the entire team that he had to go to the nearby high school to get a helmet that fit my huge head downward. Those kids were super nice. I don't find learning domestically comfortable, but that hasn't stopped me from forgetting I'm wearing a mask on more than one occasion I've attempted the French fries with my mask all luckily I was dip my fries and catch up.

So there is no boost of ego quite like walking around the world with stains from food on your mask is that lot on your task know it's catch up.

Be safe everyone, I'm Jane Pauley a little early this week so please join us when our trumpet sounds again next Sunday morning.

Crazy time is the point is we people in the best way to protect people final season Millstream
