The fighting in Ukraine continues as the world watches on hoping for an end to the bloodshed but what will that take how can this conflict finally draw to a close. David Martin will put those questions to Gen. David Petronius know Vladimir Putin Bass say he expects nothing less than total victory in Ukraine, but with prospects for that outcome looking increasingly uncertain. Is there another way out. David Martin considers Putin's options just over five weeks into the war and one thing is clear about how it will in there will be no surrender and there will be a negotiated settlement. I think of but clearly there is still a lot of fighting going on each side tries to create conditions that give it more leverage at the negotiating table.

Former CIA director and commander of America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan retired Army Gen. David Petronius is the Russians have already lost the battle for key they will not be able to accomplish what was presumably there main objective. From the outset, which was to topple the Zielinski government and replace it with the pro-Russian government. If I plan to take care of has failed his person decisive battle of the war already been formed only if Ukraine can prevent another decisive battle from being thought this could be pivotal in the sense that it's perilous for Ukraine apparel now looms in eastern Ukraine, where Russia is reinforcing and concentrating its firepower in an attempt to encircle much of Ukraine's Army.

The outcome of the vicious battle for the city of variable could be the key people become Ukrainian Alamo fighting for the last defender tying down considerable number of Russian battalions and making them pay literally every block that they're taking. Once that dies eventually fall as tragically, it appears will be the case that will free up a number of Russian forces if he were to destroy the Ukrainian Army in the East within the rest of the country be open to. I don't think so.

You're fighting an entire nation, there will be limits to how far they can go and I don't expect more than the middle of the country that love to get to the very center, is it possible that the Ukrainians could hold out if they can get the additional weapons and ammo vehicles and so forth. Absolutely no question in a course. They have this unbelievable determination, fortitude, creativity, resourcefulness there. Everything the Russians are not present. Zielinski was prove himself not just a brilliant communicator but a savvy commander-in-chief says the war is at a turning point would you say it's going to take weeks or months for this to play out. Could be weeks, it could be months depending on how bad the damage is basically describing a war of attrition. There is a war of attrition that's going on again is not just on the battlefield is also to a degree between what's happening in Ukraine and what's happening to to Moscow into the Russian economy financial system and business community and the war between two men between Vladimir Putin, who cannot seem to appear weak. He has to remain the strongman infallible master of everything and president Zielinski, who is leading a country that is fighting for its very survival for US officials say one of them is not being told the truth about what's happening on the battlefield house war and when the leader isn't being told the truth. Well the leader isn't dumb. He has to recognize the reality of what has happened. They did not achieve what they set out to achieve.

Deep down, he realizes that he has plunged his country into a colossal mistake and has demonstrated colossal misjudgment will he be sufficiently chastened so that he doesn't try something like this again. I don't know that he will think that he is sufficiently chastened what he will be is sufficiently we hope sufficiently weakened by calls her his closest friend, Nora O'Donnell talks with the first sister Valerie Biden Owens 11 hearing about your own career and your work on the campaigns that have been described as an iron fist in a Cashmere clock and sprinkle. This man cannot remain well some call that Some people call that unvarnished truth by throwing anybody out of the gap As he speaks the truth.
